Quick notes
San Francisco signed Ke'shawn Vaughn to bolster its injury-depleted running back room. Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, and Isaac Guerendo are all dealing with injuries, while Patrick Taylor Jr. sat out practice. During Wednesday's practice, Vaughn joined Jordan Mason, Cody Schrader, and Matt Breida as the only healthy options.
The Brandon Aiyuk storyline has overshadowed recent training camp practices. However, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't letting the situation distract his players. He seemed pleased with Wednesday's session, telling players afterward, "Hell of a day, man."
Wide receiver Danny Gray continued to practice in a blue no-contact jersey after landing hard on his shoulder on Sunday. Cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. returned to practice but was limited.
Tight end Jake Tonges had a successful day catching the football and has turned in a couple of solid practices this week.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Mason is making a strong case for the RB2 job behind McCaffrey. "Mason had a very active practice with seven rushing attempts and two pass receptions. Mason has greatly improved his route-running and pass-catching in order to give the 49ers' offense more options when he's on the field," Maiocco wrote.
Nick Bosa dominated the defensive side of the ball, recording three would-be sacks during team drills. "He also had success in 1v1 pass rush drills, showing off a nice spin move to beat Jaylon Moore, who has been doing well in those drills lately," wrote Wagoner.
Defensive linemen Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Austin Bryant also recorded would-be sacks.
With linebacker Fred Warner sidelined (see below), Curtis Robinson and Dee Winters started alongside De'Vondre Campbell with the first-team defense.
Veteran safety George Odum is showing that he can be more than a special-teams ace. He intercepted quarterback Brock Purdy twice, once on a misplaced ball intended for Mason and another on an overthrow toward wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
"Odum also had a Purdy-to-Cody Schrader swing pass read perfectly and would have blown up the underfed rookie running back if it were a real game," Maiocco wrote.
"He's a football player," defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen said. "Like I said, he really did well last year during this time as well. And he's just, as far as improving at the safety spot, he has all the tools. He's just continued to feel comfortable in the system to where, again, he can play fast."
It was an inconsistent day for the quarterbacks and their targets. Wagoner noted that Purdy, Brandon Allen, and Tanner Mordecai were off-target on several throws. Making things worse, tight end George Kittle dropped a well-thrown deep ball from Purdy, and Gray failed to haul in a deep pass from Allen.
"There were a few good connections, though, as Purdy hit Jennings on a slant for a couple of big gains and dropped in a great ball to [WR Ronnie] Bell in between double coverage with Bell making a nice catch and hanging on through contact," Wagoner wrote.
Maiocco noted that Allen and Josh Dobbs had strong practices, making the battle for the QB2 job intriguing. While Dobbs had a 30-yard pass to wide receiver Tay Martin and a 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Taylor, Maiocco added, "Allen's comfort in the 49ers' system has shown this summer."
Cornerback Ambry Thomas broke up multiple passes. Rookie Renardo Green continued to make his presence known with a few pass breakups, too, including one against physical wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
"It's been a process, but he's gotten better every day," Sorensen said of Green.
According to Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group, safety Malik Mustapha blitzed and stripped the ball from Dobbs in the backfield.
Kicker Jake Moody connected on three of his four field-goal attempts, with cornerback Deommodore Lenoir blocking one kick.
Injury updates
Warner is dealing with some "foot irritation" and did not practice. "Nothing major at all," the linebacker said after practice.
Punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who has been dealing with some "knee irritation," was in uniform and served as kicker Jake Moody's holder during field-goal attempts.
Mustapha had his left leg looked at after limping off the practice field but later returned.
