San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is heading into his third NFL season looking to build on his impressive 2023 campaign, during which he set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This achievement is particularly notable given the history of quarterbacks who have preceded him with the 49ers.
Purdy has dedicated significant effort this offseason to further his development and hopes his hard work will propel San Francisco toward securing that elusive sixth championship.
"It's my third year in this offense, so it's like learning another language," Purdy said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "And for me, I'm more comfortable with it, going through my reads, where guys should be and lined up, and the timing, the rhythm of a play, and a concept, and why Kyle's (Shanahan, head coach) calling a play. Those are all things that I've continued to grow and be more comfortable with.
"So my next step is that, is being as efficient as possible every play, every down, every series, every quarter. That's my next step, and that's my challenge to myself. And so, we're going out there every day just grinding against a really good defense."
Despite his rising status and the prospect of becoming one of—if not the—highest-paid players in the NFL next year, Purdy remains one of the most grounded figures in the league. His humility and perspective are evident as he reflects on his journey from the last overall pick in the 2022 draft to a prominent role with the 49ers.
"For me, I just know that I didn't get here on my own, and that's from [how I was] raised, all the way up through to leaving for college," Purdy explained. "The people that I was surrounded with in college, and then even here in the NFL, such a great organization with the coaches, the system, the players, everybody around me has helped me have success. And so, for me to take all the glory and say I've made it here on my own, that, to me, is just wrong, and it's not true.
"So I always just have that in mind, and I'm reminded of that. And at the same time, my faith just reminds me of who I really am, just in terms of being a son, a brother, a husband, the real things in life. That's life, not just being a quarterback. I'm not gonna be able to play this game forever my whole life, and so I'm reminded of all those things put together, and it allows me to just have a level-headed, simple kind of life."
As Purdy prepares for the upcoming season, his unique combination of skill, dedication, and humility will be crucial as he navigates the challenges of his NFL career and aims to lead the 49ers to Super Bowl glory.
