The San Francisco 49ers boast one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, a fact recognized by ESPN's Mike Clay in his position-by-position rankings. While only one of the 49ers' position groups earned a top ranking, the overall roster was declared the best in the league.

Unsurprisingly, the highest-ranked position group was running back, largely due to the presence of Christian McCaffrey, the NFL's best all-around player at the position. McCaffrey led the league with 2,023 scrimmage yards last season, earning NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors. He is the 49ers' most impactful playmaker on offense.

"The 49ers have the league's best all-around RB in Christian McCaffrey, who has finished his past four healthy seasons no lower than fourth among backs in snaps, touches, and yards (and he was first in touches, yards, and touchdowns in 2023)," Clay wrote. "Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason, and intriguing rookie Isaac Guerendo provide solid depth, and Kyle Juszczyk is arguably the league's best fullback."

San Francisco also ranked highly at wide receiver, tight end, and off-ball linebacker.

However, the offensive line was the lowest-ranked group, coming in at No. 21 compared to other NFL teams. The offensive line has been a position that the 49ers have admittedly prioritized less than others, which has been a source of frustration for the fan base.

"This is my personal opinion, if they ask me, invest in guys that touch the ball, guys that can touch the ball and score touchdowns," offensive line coach Chris Foerster shared this offseason. "And then there's a range of guys, second, third, fourth round, fifth round even, that we will find starting offensive linemen in."

With Trent Williams being one of the best offensive linemen ever to play, the drop-off among the other starters is significant. The other projected Week 1 starters are Aaron Banks, Jake Brendel, Colton McKivitz, and rookie Dominick Puni. Other injuries provided Puni with increased practice reps in training camp, giving him the inside track to start against the New York Jets.

Though many expected the 49ers to address the offensive line with their first-round pick, the team waited until the third round to select Puni.

"I've heard the narrative that we're ignoring the O-line and everything," head coach Kyle Shanahan explained. "If we felt the O-linemen was the best pick there, there's no doubt that's who we would take."

The next lowest-ranked position is safety, where All-Pro Talanoa Hufanga continues to work his way back from the ACL injury he suffered in November 2023. Once healthy, he is expected to pair with second-year player Ji'Ayir Brown. George Odum provides veteran experience and can fill in if Hufanga suffers a setback. The 49ers also drafted Malik Mustapha in the fourth round.

"The defending NFC champions remain absolutely stacked," Clay wrote regarding the 49ers' top overall roster. "We're still learning about Brock Purdy's ceiling (Kyle Shanahan's system is known to inflate stats), but the plan is certainly working, as Purdy led the NFL in QBR and EPA in 2023.

"Purdy will once again benefit from the league's best group of skill players (McCaffrey, Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel Sr., and George Kittle) and has Trent Williams protecting his blind side. The defense is just as good, with Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Javon Hargrave, and Charvarius Ward leading a unit that returns nine of its top 11 players in terms of snaps from 2023."

Clay ranks the New York Jets as having the second-best roster in the NFL, with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs coming in third.

Here is where the 49ers ranked at each position:

  • Quarterback: 9
  • Running back: 1
  • Wide receiver: 2
  • Tight end: 4
  • O-line: 21
  • Interior D-line: 14
  • Edge rusher: 8
  • Off-ball linebacker: 2
  • Cornerback: 12
  • Safety: 19
