San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has yet to decide who Brock Purdy's primary backup for the upcoming season will be. However, on Wednesday, he made one thing clear: he has confidence in both Josh Dobbs and Brandon Allen.
Dobbs and Allen have competed throughout training camp and the preseason for the QB2 role. Although fans have speculated that Dobbs might have the edge, Shanahan insists that the race remains tight, with no clear frontrunner.
"I feel very good about both of them," Shanahan told reporters. "I think they're neck and neck. That hasn't changed. It's been that way for a while. Yeah, I wish it would [be clearer] so it makes decisions easier on us, but when anything is like that, I won't make a decision until I have to, and I don't think I have to for a little bit."
Dobbs has shown his ability to improvise on the field, using his mobility to extend plays during the preseason. On the other hand, Allen, who was with the 49ers last season, is more familiar with Shanahan's offense.
When asked if the scout-team quarterback might change week to week based on the opponent, Shanahan noted that while Dobbs and Allen may have different playing styles, he considers both veterans to be on equal footing in terms of skill level.
"So those are things that you always look into for the scout team," Shanahan remarked. "Those are things that you always look into how our game plan is or what we think we need to beat another team."
