On Wednesday, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch expressed frustration over the stalled contract negotiations with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and tackle Trent Williams. Not long ago, Lynch was optimistic, confident that resolutions were within reach.

With the regular-season opener fast approaching, the organization feels an increased sense of urgency to resolve its standoffs with Aiyuk and Williams.

The 49ers hope to be at full strength when they host the New York Jets on Monday, September 9. However, even if Aiyuk and Williams were to sign today, there's no guarantee that either would be ready to make a significant impact in Week 1. Aiyuk last practiced with the team in February, leading up to the Super Bowl, and Williams has been away since early June.

As the top decision-maker in the 49ers' front office, Lynch bears the responsibility for the current situation and the delay in signing Aiyuk and Williams.

"I saw a situation that we were going to have to deal with, and man, we've been trying for a long time," Lynch said. "We don't get paid to try. We get paid to do. And I'll take accountability for anything that hasn't happened. But I won't stop continuing to fight to find the best resolution, whatever that may be."

Lynch mentioned that communication has been ongoing with Aiyuk, Williams, and their representatives, but the sides have yet to break through these stalemates.

"Trent is a fantastic player," Lynch said. "He's a tremendous leader on this team. I will never fall short on my praise of Trent and what he's meant to this place. It was a great day when I got that call from [former Commanders head coach Ron] Rivera saying that they would do that trade. He's been incredible since he's been here.

"We value Trent, we love Trent, we want Trent here. And I'm hopeful that can happen soon."
