San Francisco 49ers fans breathed a collective sigh of relief after Brandon Aiyuk finally agreed to sign a four-year, $120 million contract extension, which reportedly includes $76 million in guarantees. Interestingly, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers remained firm on the deal they offered on August 10, which Aiyuk ultimately accepted.

San Francisco had reportedly initially offered Aiyuk a contract that would pay him about $26 million annually, a significant increase from the $14.124 million he was set to earn on his team-exercised fifth-year option. Despite Aiyuk's demands, the team refused to raise the offer for a long time, only restarting contract talks earlier this month. This led to the contract that was eventually agreed upon.

Tensions escalated when Aiyuk requested a trade before reporting to training camp and subsequently refused to participate in practices without a new deal.

Ultimately, Aiyuk agreed to the same deal the 49ers had offered shortly after negotiations resumed. This ensures he will suit up for the Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets and remain with the team for the foreseeable future.

Aiyuk secured the financial stability he sought while becoming one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers. At the same time, the 49ers finally ended the drama surrounding the prolonged standoff, retaining their leading receiver from the last two seasons.

Update: Aiyuk's agent, Ryan Williams, has denied Schefter's report.
