49ers’ Brock Purdy leads NFL in passing yards through two weeks

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is on pace for 4,675 passing yards, which would set a new single-season franchise record, surpassing his own mark of 4,280 passing yards from last year. With 550 passing yards through two games, Purdy currently leads all NFL quarterbacks.

Below are the five quarterbacks with the most passing yards this season:

  • Brock Purdy, 49ers - 550 yards
  • Gardner Minshew, Raiders - 533 yards
  • Matthew Stafford, Rams - 533 yards
  • Jared Goff, Lions - 524 yards
  • Lamar Jackson, Ravens - 520 yards

Can Purdy maintain this pace? It will be a challenge, especially with running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve and sidelined for at least three more games due to Achilles tendinitis and wide receiver Deebo Samuel out for a couple of weeks with a calf strain.

Purdy will need wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to step up in their absence. After signing a massive four-year, $120 million contract extension and becoming one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers, Aiyuk has recorded just six catches for 71 yards through two games. His contributions will be critical to keeping the 49ers' offense on track.

Despite completing a career-high 72.3 percent of his passes, Purdy has only thrown one touchdown and tossed an interception. His 96.3 passer rating is a significant drop from his league-leading 113.0 rating last season.

Following a disappointing 23-17 road loss to the Minnesota Vikings, which dropped the 49ers to 1-1, San Francisco will aim to rebound against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

"It's as simple as executing," Purdy said after the Week 2 loss. "We got the players, we got the scheme, we got what it takes. It's dropping back and executing, knowing where my answers are at, and getting the balls into the guys' hands, and drop stepping, and getting first downs. It's all that.

"It's football, man. Just because you've got really good players and good scheme doesn't mean the other team's going to give it to you. You have to go out and earn it. We've had to learn that the first two games of the season, so hopefully, we can be better next week."

The Super Bowl-hopeful 49ers will look to find their rhythm and capitalize on Purdy's early-season success as they head into a crucial divisional matchup.
