Wide receiver Jauan Jennings missed Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and it's looking increasingly likely that he'll miss his second consecutive game when the San Francisco 49ers host the Dallas Cowboys this weekend. Jennings didn't practice on Wednesday or Thursday, and head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn't optimistic about the veteran wideout's chances of playing.
When asked if Jennings might be an injured reserve candidate, Shanahan responded, "No, he's not an IR candidate. Expect to get him back after the bye week. Haven't ruled him out yet for this week, but definitely would say he's doubtful. But I'd be surprised if he won't be back after the bye week."
On a positive note, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle returned to practice after missing Wednesday's session. Samuel was hospitalized earlier in the week with pneumonia, while Kittle has been managing a foot injury. Both were limited participants in Thursday's practice.
Given that he was just released from the hospital on Tuesday, Shanahan was asked about Samuel's progress.
"The fact that he was able to be out there and attempt some stuff, to me, is good news," Shanahan said. "I remember having pneumonia in my early 20s, and I did not feel like I could even walk down stairs about a week later. So there's all different types of levels of it. He's doing much better.
"What I've learned is pneumonias can be a little bit different. He had a kind of a little bit of an unusual one, but he's doing good enough that he was able to practice today. Hopefully, that'll continue getting better, and hopefully, he'll have a chance to help us out on Sunday."
