According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers are reuniting with safety Tashaun Gipson, signing him to the practice squad. The team is reportedly releasing kicker Anders Carlson to make room for the defender.

Gipson played two seasons (2022-2023) with the 49ers before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason. However, he hasn't appeared in a game this season due to a six-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance policy.

The Jaguars released him on Monday, opening the door for his return to the Bay Area.

Initially signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming in 2012, Gipson (5-11, 212) played a key role for the 49ers last season. In 16 starts, he recorded 60 tackles, including three for a loss, one quarterback hit, a sack, three passes defensed, and an interception, logging 95 percent of the defensive snaps, per Pro Football Reference.

This addition brings a veteran presence to a safety group that has recently relied on second-year player Ji'Ayir Brown and rookie Malik Mustapha following the injury to All-Pro Talanoa Hufanga.

Gipson, 34, has compiled 684 tackles, including 18 for a loss, seven quarterback hits, 2.5 sacks, 68 passes defensed, 33 interceptions, three touchdowns, and one forced fumble over 12 NFL seasons (173 games, 165 starts). He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2014.
