The San Francisco 49ers' season took another frustrating turn on Sunday as they suffered a 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium. Despite holding a fourth-quarter lead, the 49ers once again let victory slip away, marking their third divisional loss under similar circumstances this season.
This latest defeat drops the team to a disappointing 5-5 record and last place in the NFC West standings.
Now, the 49ers face a challenging task on their journey to get back in the playoff race: a road trip to Lambeau Field to take on the 7-3 Green Bay Packers. With their season hanging in the balance, the 49ers must find a way to bounce back against one of the league's hottest teams.
What does the national media think about the 49ers compared to the rest of the league? Below is a sample of some of the most prominent power rankings from around the web, showing where San Francisco currently stands in each. As always, the highest rankings are listed first.

"As a team that's spent the last half decade white-knuckling its way through regular season after regular season in hopes of winning a Super Bowl, the 49ers' every loss inspires an outsized reaction. If you're looking for something measured, San Francisco's five losses have come by a combined 23 points. And in spite of this offense's perceived struggles, it's still one of the most efficient in the league and has done its part to keep this team in games. If a couple breaks had gone the other way, there wouldn't be so much concern. On the other hand, this defense doesn't look like it can contend with the best in the NFC, and each of these close losses has been a result of an opponent marching right down the field. The margins have closed just enough to make San Francisco vulnerable, and as this team hits the toughest part of its schedule, its playoff hopes are in dire straits." — Diante Lee

"It's still hard for me to comprehend the 49ers being 5–5. If I told you that a team had the eighth highest-scoring team in the league, a defense that's top-10 in passing yards, touchdowns allowed and interceptions, and a system that ranks top three in time of possession, yards per drive and plays run per drive, you'd guess they were pretty good, right? Green Bay, Buffalo, the Rams, Arizona and Detroit are still lurking on this schedule." — Conor Orr

"The 49ers aren't the same dominant team from last season when they routinely blew out opponents by double digits. Their vital skill-position players have dealt with injuries, which has been a blow to the offensive firepower, but San Francisco must figure out how to close games. The 49ers have blown two double-digit second-half leads, and they couldn't keep a struggling Geno Smith out of the end zone last week. San Francisco's defense needs to tighten up to help its injury-riddled offense." — Maurice Moton

"On the hot seat: Deebo Samuel. The 49ers restructured Samuel's contract in September, saving them more than $16 million against this year's salary cap and over $8 million in 2025. The deal doesn't guarantee Samuel will remain a Niner beyond this season, though that is still possible. This season, he is dealing with a myriad of nagging injuries and has been less effective in the run game (2.9 yards per carry, down from a career average of 6.3). With Brandon Aiyuk coming off a significant knee injury, the 49ers could need Samuel beyond 2024." — Nick Wagoner

"At some point it doesn't matter that four of the 49ers' losses are by a combined 13 points. They're a .500 team as we near late November. The 49ers are in real danger of missing the playoffs, which would make them the NFL's biggest disappointment." — Frank Schwab

"The 49ers lost another key division home game with George Kittle (hamstring) not suiting up and their defense breaking down late big-time without Nick Bosa (oblique). San Francisco is desperately fighting a Super Bowl hangover in a tight division that won't be decided until late in the second half." — Vinnie Iyer

"Kyle Shanahan should be completely safe. Somehow he's not. The 49ers are in the top half of the league in scoring (25 ppg) and scoring defense (22.2 ppg allowed), but something's not clicking. San Francisco has advanced at least to the NFC Championship Game the last three years and has been to two Super Bowls under Shanahan, but fans are starting to get restless. Hopefully, ownership is not. There's a better chance the 49ers get worse and not better if they make a coaching change." — Josh Kendall

"There's no other way to say it: Sunday's loss to the Seahawks was crushing. Blowing leads against NFC West opponents has become a chronic issue. Sure, the Niners were playing without George Kittle (and, for most of the second half, Nick Bosa), and a few bad breaks went against them. Those mitigating factors don't make the outcome count less when it comes to the playoff picture. If San Francisco misses the postseason -- and, as of Monday night, the team had just a 29 percent chance of making it, per Next Gen Stats -- we'll look back on this one as one of the bigger reasons why, along with earlier losses to the Rams and Cardinals. The 49ers were more in control of those games. Even so, on Sunday, they did have the ball at the Seattle 46-yard line, protecting a 17-13 lead with three minutes left. That's usually when Kyle Shanahan teams (especially at this time of year) bleed out the clock or score to put the game away. Instead, the Niners had to punt and then watch their defense allow Geno Smith and Co. to drive 80 yards in two-plus minutes for the game-winning touchdown. After all the 49ers have been through, the playoffs just might not be in the cards this season." — Eric Edholm

"The San Francisco 49ers have not played a complete game this season, and it's costing them time and again in the NFC West. They've held leads against the Seahawks, Cardinals, and Rams late in the fourth quarter but lost all three of those games in dramatic fashion. They are in last place in the NFC West, and with a tough schedule coming up, it's fair to wonder if they will even make the playoffs this season. It's been that kind of year in San Francisco." — Marcus Mosher

"TE George Kittle is hurt. DE Nick Bosa is hurt. Their pride is hurt after a fourth-quarter collapse to Seattle. And heading to Green Bay and Buffalo could inflict further pain on their already diminishing playoff prospects." — Nate Davis
