The San Francisco 49ers' slim playoff hopes were officially extinguished on Sunday following the Washington Commanders' upset victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Entering Week 16 with long-shot postseason chances, the 49ers are now mathematically eliminated from contention.
The Miami Dolphins are hosting the 49ers at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. San Francisco will close out its season with a home game against the Detroit Lions in Week 17 and a road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 18.
This marks a disappointing milestone for the franchise. The 49ers have become the 16th team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to miss the playoffs the season after losing the Super Bowl. The last team to share this fate? The 2020 49ers.
The Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals have also been eliminated from playoff contention.
