KNBR host and podcast personality Larry Krueger recently shared his perspective on the looming contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy, a storyline that is poised to be among the most discussed during the upcoming offseason.
Some have questioned whether Purdy deserves to join the ranks of the NFL's highest-paid players, citing his inconsistent performances this season. While the blame for the 49ers' struggles cannot be placed solely on the young quarterback's shoulders, skeptics argue that Purdy has yet to demonstrate the ability to carry a team like some of the league's elite passers.
Krueger, however, doesn't envision Purdy giving the 49ers a team-friendly deal and believes the quarterback's camp will demand an annual salary exceeding $50 million. While he hasn't spoken directly to Purdy's agent, Krueger says he's heard from those who have.
"I haven't talked to the agent, but I know people that have, and he's not going for this three years, $40 million [annually], all of it guaranteed, $120 [million total]," Krueger said. "They're not going an AAV of $40 million when [Cowboys QB] Dak Prescott's at $60 million.
"So I think there's potential for Brock to maybe give the Niners some form of a discount so they can build a roster around him that enables him to compete for a championship, but I think you're crazy if you think he's settling for $45 million."
Krueger concludes that Purdy will likely seek something in the $50-55 million range, noting, "And I think that's the best deal they're going to get."
Krueger also suggested that forcing Purdy to play out the final year of his rookie contract is not a viable option for the 49ers. After all, Purdy, one of the NFL's biggest bargains in recent seasons, has earned an average base salary of less than $1 million annually.
"It's time to pay up," Krueger added.
