Brock Purdy will not play in the San Francisco 49ers' season finale against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The quarterback sustained a right elbow contusion with nerve inflammation during Monday night's game against the Detroit Lions.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that veteran Josh Dobbs will start at quarterback this weekend, marking the end of an injury-plagued and mistake-filled season for the once Super Bowl-hopeful franchise.
Shanahan acknowledged that injuries along the offensive line played a role in the decision to start Josh Dobbs over Brandon Allen, with Dobbs' mobility being a key factor.
"He's been great, him and Brandon," Shanahan said. "They've been two good guys to have there. I've kind of looked at both of them as our two throughout the year, kind of a little bit what I said in preseason.
"But they both have done really good looks on scout team. They split all the reps there. They're always ready. They both prepare like they're going to be a starter every week, so they've been great."
The 49ers began the year with high expectations but fell short, finishing with a disappointing 6-10 record and missing the playoffs. Heading into the Week 18 matchup, the team aims to close the season on a high note, hoping a victory will provide some momentum heading into the offseason.
Dobbs replaced Purdy during Monday night's game after the injury. He orchestrated a touchdown drive, completing three of four pass attempts for 35 yards and rushing for a seven-yard score.
