Few expected the San Francisco 49ers to target a wide receiver in last year's draft, as it wasn't considered a pressing need. Even more surprising was the team's decision to use its first-round pick on Ricky Pearsall, who most didn't view as the top receiver available in their draft slot. This serves as a reminder of how unpredictable mock drafts can be.
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. recently unveiled his first mock draft for the 2025 NFL Draft, projecting general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan to tackle one of the team's most critical needs—the offensive line.
Kiper has the 49ers selecting former Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. with the 11th overall pick, envisioning him as a potential successor to Trent Williams.
"Banks has a ton of experience, having started 42 games over his college career -- and he allowed only three sacks over that time," Kiper wrote. "I'm curious to see his combine measurements -- height might be a question mark if he's 6-foot-3 or shorter -- but he has the movement traits and strength to seal off the edge in pass protection."
Banks excelled as the Longhorns' left tackle last season, earning a stellar 89.8 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, which ranked fifth among all collegiate offensive linemen. Over 537 pass-blocking snaps, he allowed just one sack and 10 total pressures.
Additionally, Banks posted an 81.0 run-blocking grade and a career-high 86.0 overall offensive grade, solidifying himself as a top collegiate prospect.
The talented tackle has become a popular choice for the 49ers in mock drafts, seen as a long-term solution at left tackle and a potential heir to their future Hall of Famer.
"The 49ers still have Trent Williams locking down the left side for two more seasons, but he will be 37 years old at the start of next season," Kiper added. "It's time to start planning for the future. Plus, Banks could help on the right side for now, where the Niners have missed Mike McGlinchey (signed with Denver two years ago)."
For now, Banks could compete with current right tackle Colton McKivitz, whose pass protection has drawn criticism throughout his career. However, McKivitz showed improvement this season, earning a career-best 72.2 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus.
