Pro Football Focus contributor Dalton Wasserman analyzed the latest crop of impending NFL free agents, highlighting one player each team can't afford to lose. For the San Francisco 49ers, Wasserman spotlighted linebacker Dre Greenlaw—a free agent whose future is clouded by some uncertainty.
Greenlaw fought back from a torn Achilles suffered a year ago, rejoining his teammates on the football field on December 12. However, his comeback was short-lived, as he exited early due to knee soreness.
The linebacker made another brief appearance in the following game but was sidelined again after experiencing calf soreness, ultimately ending his abbreviated season.
Despite his recent injuries, Greenlaw's impact when healthy is undeniable. Paired with Fred Warner, he forms one of the league's top linebacker duos, underscoring the importance of his return if the 49ers and Greenlaw can reach a contract agreement this offseason.
"Re-signing Greenlaw comes with inherent risk, given the multitude of injuries he's dealt with over the past 12 months," Wasserman noted. "He's a vital part of the 49ers' run defense, though, and his absence was a big reason for the team ranking 28th in PFF run-defense grade this season."
The 49ers must navigate a delicate offseason balancing act, knowing that quarterback Brock Purdy will soon account for a significant portion of the salary cap. San Francisco has enjoyed the flexibility of a starting quarterback on a rookie contract, but that will quickly come to an end.
"Surely, San Francisco will spend some of its resources improving the defensive line, as well, but Greenlaw's presence would give the team some peace of mind on that side of the ball," Wasserman concluded.
