Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was considered for the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator role last year but ultimately lost out to Nick Sorensen. Sorensen's tenure was short-lived, as he was dismissed after just one season.
When the vacancy reopened, head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that Staley was once again a candidate. However, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who previously served as the 49ers' defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, was always the leading contender for the role.
The 49ers opted to wait on Saleh, who was actively interviewing for head coaching positions across the NFL. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, this decision put Shanahan and the 49ers in a precarious position. As Saleh spoke with other organizations, other teams snatched up Shanahan's second, third, and fourth options for the defensive coordinator position. The 49ers faced the possibility of losing out on all their top choices if Saleh were to land elsewhere.
Fortunately, the patience paid off. Saleh ultimately decided to return to the 49ers, reuniting with Shanahan to take over as defensive coordinator.

This development leaves questions about Brandon Staley's future. After missing out on the defensive coordinator job last year, Staley joined the team as an assistant head coach, supporting Sorensen on the defensive side of the ball. However, Maiocco shared some insight into Staley's current standing with the organization (h/t to Nick Ogden for the find).
"I'm getting the impression that Brandon Staley, who was considered the only internal candidate for the 49ers' defensive coordinator job—that's what Shanahan said on the Wednesday after the season—I'm hearing that he probably will not be back with the 49ers as, basically, Robert Saleh comes in," Maiocco stated on his YouTube channel. "He's going to be, in essence, the head coach of the defense. He's going to run that defense.
"And so, Brandon Staley, doesn't appear as if he'll be back with the 49ers."
Despite this, Staley's reputation around the league remains strong. The coach has experience as a defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams and as the Chargers' head coach, making him an appealing candidate for other organizations.
Losing out on the defensive coordinator job in consecutive years likely influenced Staley's decision to move on.
