Just when it seemed Cooper Kupp might be leaving the NFC West, he's moving from one San Francisco 49ers rival to another instead. The wide receiver announced he is signing with the Seattle Seahawks, setting up two matchups a season against his former team, the Los Angeles Rams.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Kupp is signing a three-year, $45 million contract with the Seahawks. He's expected to help fill the void left by the departures of Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.
The Rams released Kupp this week after failing to find a trade partner, ending his eight-year run with the team that drafted him in the third round in 2017. It's a homecoming for Kupp, who grew up in Yakima and played college football at Eastern Washington.
Kupp was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2021 after recording 1,947 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI victory, where he was named Super Bowl MVP.
When asked in December about the Rams' success in finding players like Kupp in the draft, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted it can be a little frustrating. Now, he'll have to keep facing him regularly.
"You'd rather them not find really good players, but teams do," Shanahan said. "And Kupp's been one of the best here over however long he's been playing."
Over his eight NFL seasons, Kupp has totaled 7,776 receiving yards and 57 touchdowns. However, he hasn't played a full season since 2021, having missed 18 games since then.
