Fred Warner remains the heart and soul of the San Francisco 49ers defense. The All-Pro linebacker has continued to make his presence felt throughout the 2026 season, reinforcing his status as one of the NFL's best defensive players.
After suffering a season-ending ankle injury last year, Warner has returned to his usual high level of play. He continues to demonstrate why he is widely regarded as the league's best linebacker.
On Tuesday morning, 49ers cornerback Renardo Green joined Bay Area radio station KNBR and discussed what it means to play alongside the future Hall of Famer.
"Fred is like, in my life, top two best football players I've ever played with or seen with my own eyes," Green said. "His ability to process what's going on before the snap, his ability to read and react, and his ability just to make plays as consistently as he makes plays—and he makes big time game-changing plays—he could really do it all.
"He's the linebacker you create when you're playing Road to Glory (EA Sports College Football), or when you're playing a video game, you create Fred. Playing with a guy like that and just seeing how he approaches the game, just seeing his philosophy or how he understands the game, you see why Fred has had all the success he's had, just because it's the way he thinks. It's his mentality. It's his understanding of the game."
Green's praise extended beyond Warner's physical abilities and knack for making game-changing plays. He also highlighted the veteran linebacker's leadership and ability to keep teammates composed, especially when the game gets overwhelming.
"He says things like that, and it can kind of slow some guys' minds down to not make them feel overwhelmed or feel like they've got to do too much," Green continued. "It can help guys put an emphasis on certain things."
For Green, playing alongside Warner offers benefits that extend well beyond game day. The veteran linebacker serves as a resource for his teammates, helping them improve their understanding of the game through his preparation, communication, and experience.
"Having a guy like that, that understands the game, it's like you get better from playing with him, but you also get better from being around him just because of the simple fact that his ball knowledge is just so high," Green concluded.
