The 49ers wrapped up the preseason with a 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. It was largely an evaluation of several players. Here are some observations from tonight's game and what they could mean for the final 53-man roster.
Making the Team
Jeff Wilson Jr. went from preseason running back to a likely member of the final 53-man roster as he capped off a very good preseason with 21 carries for 100 yards and a gorgeous 41-yard score. With Jerick McKinnon likely headed to season-ending injured reserve, Wilson Jr has shown that he can be a reliable back who already has game day experience.
Damontre Moore continued pressuring the quarterback as he has done all preseason. It would be a stunner if he were to not make the team.
The Unknowns
Quarterback C.J. Beathard had a pretty solid evening going 6 for 9 for 58 yards and a 21-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. He was also able to help as a fullback on the Jeff Wilson touchdown run. It's hard to say if Beathard did enough to earn a roster spot.
Bourne caught a touchdown, but also had a drop, adding to his drop total of three for the preseason. He should make the team, but it's hard to get a read on what the coaching staff will do. One thing that may be telling is that Richie James and Jordan Matthews didn't play much, if at all.
Defensive End Kevin Givens continued playing well and while it's not certain he makes the 53, the 49ers could stash him on the practice squad by releasing him and picking him back up with the number two spot on waivers.
Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair could also very easily make the team but could be released and picked back up for the practice squad.
Guard Najee Toran didn't have a great day, but also played center for the first time in his career. One of the reserve guards will make the team, just not sure who.
Missing the Cut
Guard Joshua Garnett did not look good on a number of plays. He missed blocking assignments and just didn't look like a reliable guard. It is more than likely that he will be playing elsewhere in 2019.
All eyes will be on the coaching staff and front office this Saturday as they get down to 53 by 1 p.m. Pacific.
