The San Francisco 49ers head into today's game against the Cincinnati Bengals at 1-0, after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-17 in Week 1. Here are some quick thoughts heading into the game:
Jimmy Garoppolo- National media pundits are saying that Jimmy G is on a short leash and could be replaced early in the season. He just played in his first regular season game coming off a torn ACL, and led the 49ers to a victory on the road. The 49ers already invested nearly $60 million in the starting quarterback, and it's doubtful that the team will not give Garoppolo every opportunity to prove that he is the 49ers' future at the position.
49ers' defense- This unit clearly has more confidence and swag than the previous two years, but will that hold up? The pass rush has improved with the additions of Dee Ford and Nick Bosa, but both have been oft-injured. The depth at LB behind starters Fred Warner, Kwon Alexander and Dre Greenlaw is concerning. However, the depth in the defensive backfield looks solid as previous potential starters, Jimmie Ward (injured) and Jason Verrett, are now relegated to backup duty. This defensive unit has a chance to make a big leap in 2019, but injuries could derail all progress that has been made.
Dante Pettis- The second-year wide receiver saw just two snaps last week in Week 1. Shanahan expressed frustration about the amount of plays Pettis was in on, and projected that he will see more playing time in Week 2. Look for the 49ers' receiver to rebound against the Bengals in both snap count and overall production. Neither rookie Deebo Samuel nor Marquise Goodwin stood out with Pettis sidelined, and there is still a chance that Pettis will be one of the leading receivers in 2019.
Offensive line- Week 1 was the first time all of the starters played together in 2019, and it showed. The line only allowed one sack but got minimal push in the run game against the Buccaneers' defense. The 49ers carried the ball 32 times for 98 yards, a meager 3.1 yard average per carry. This unit will have to step up in Week 2 to see more production in the running game, which will allow more space for Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers' offense to operate their go to play-action passing game.
Kyle Shanahan- Shanahan was able to get his first opening week victory as the 49ers' head coach in Week 1. Will he be able to take that momentum and capitalize on a winnable game in Cincinnati? The 49ers looked sloppy at times in Tampa Bay and penalties continue to cost the team points consistently. The 49ers will have to start playing more disciplined with fewer self-inflicted mistakes in order for them to be successful during the 2019 campaign. No one doubts Shanahan's ability as a play caller, but it is now time for him to demonstrate that he can lead and keep his team accountable.
