well that's cool.. and different. So many have stuffed Mettenberger in the 50-80 range, and that just makes me . Yeah, Mett isn't going to run for big yardage or evade sacks like some can... but he can adequately drop back, shift in the pocket, and even run for a few yards. Won't be an issue in many systems.

Ideally Harb wants to have 2 starting-caliber QBs if it was realistic which it's not. That's probably why he loved the idea of keeping Alex but we all know that wasn't happening. Garappolo (sp?) is pretty intriguing. I saw a little footage of his pro-day workout. He doesn't have Kap velocity but throws a beautiful looking deep ball. A high-arcing pass with a lot of air underneath & enough velocity to get it there on time. Kinda like RW. In just that few seconds of video I could instantly tell his even-tempered demeanor and confidence (even though he's just doing non-defensed passing drills).

IMO, Mettenberger was a 2nd rounder before the injury. Well, it's not like he can get much slower than he already is, so I don't think it will matter much. His advantage of course is the success he experienced last year in Cameron's pro-style offense. Mett was 4th in overall passer rating, 3rd in yards per attempt and had the same % of TDs per pass attempt (13) as did David Carr who lead the nation in TD passes with 50. That ratio was actually a little better than Teddy Bridgewater and way better than Blake Bortles.

Mettenberger is a big strong kid with a cannon and experience handling a pro-style playbook. You give him a halfway decent line, a solid run game and weapons like Josh Gordon, Sammy Watkins and Jordan Cameron, and it's game on.

It would light a much needed fire under his ass. I personally wouldn't mind letting Kaep walk if we picked this guy and he turned out to be good/serviceable. I'm not convinced Kaep can win game by himself if needed.

Of course it is realistic, with the rookie salary cap the Niners could lock up their back up qb situation for four years by drafting this guy. This is assuming he drops to the second round, which is highly unlikely. How sweet would it be to get Alex Smiths replacement with the second second round pick from his trade.

This would also put competition at qb, something baalke wants. Additionally they could let CK7 play out his contract and franchise him, basically a 2 year 10 million dollar obligation, and then see what happens in 2016.

Garrapollo supposedly has Alex Smith syndrome. The deer in the headlights, upright fetal position thing when he senses pressure.

I was catching up with some podcasts on 95.7THE GAME and they were interviewing Bill Polian, the former Colts GM. He was analyst at the combine and the question was posed who it was that his opinion changed after seeing him there. He started out saying he didn't really have strong opinions on a guy to begin with, but he was surprised somewhat more than expected by one player after seeing him live. He said Jimmy Garoppolo "jumped out at me" in throwing the ball out of that main group of QBs (keep in mind Manziel and Bridgewater didn't throw). You know what Baalke says about his initial gut reaction to something RE: the book "Blink". I don't put a ton of stock in the combine cause it's a bunch of drills, but he was just noting his impression of Garopp's throwing. Polian said that he'd seen some of his reg. season film, but wanted to see more of the QB. Remember, he was the guy who selected P. Manning over Ryan (gulp) Leaf. Not sayin' Garoppolo is a franchise QB. I think he's definitely a solid career backup who's capable as a starter if things go south with your current franchise-type QB.

I think he has the potential to be a franchise QB certainly. It wouldn't shock me to see him as a long-term starting QB, he has some nice tools to work with, very nice quick release, good pocket mobility, solid arm strength, good accuracy on his throws, can lead receivers, puts the ball to where they only can get it. He's got some Brett Favre in him too, will make some jaw-dropping passes into insanely tight windows and of course.....it also results in some big interceptions at times. I see him as being one of the better QB's to emerge from this draft.

I'm a little curious if we do decide to take him in the first. I can see some logic in it. If Harbs looks at him and says "i'll make this guy a top 10 QB" then you can trade him in a year or 2 for a top 5/10 pick. This draft is really not top heavy, and all the talent will be taken in rounds 2-4 anyways, so it's as good of year as any to try something like that.

Would love to have him but I think he will fly up the boards and end up in the early to mid 2nd round. Even late 2nd is too early for us to take a QB it would just create a QB controversy with the media. If negotiations are going well we shouldn't take a QB before the late 3rd to compete with Bethel-Thompson or another vet for the 2nd spot.

screw media BS.... Kaep needs to be strong enough to step up and stay ahead of the footsteps.
