DB Dontae Johnson North Carolina State

Yeah, I love the Johnson pick. This guys has been playing great. You guys are right...ward probably gives up that catch in the redzone...I dont think he would have scored but definately would have gotten the catch...

who knows.

Gives us size and speed...cuz he can run for sure.
Turned out to be a great pick and a bargain in the 4th rd. Getting him in the 4th and Llynch in the 5th was a bonus that really makes this draft special with the way Hyde and Borland and Martin are performing. Ward and Ellington were solid and we have yet to see Thomas and Acker and Reaser and Millard and Ramsey.

I agree

I was stoked to see him in there today with Cox sliding inside.

Yeah, I bumped his thread yesterday giving him BIG props. Not only did his LONG arms tip that critical PD for the INT in the RZ but, he blitzed (b/c you can line him up in press and jam-press) and helped force the INT to Reid IIRC and like yo both noted, you barely knew he was on the opposite side of Cully this game when Cox slide inside. That is a great sign esp. b/c Brock will probably be out a while and Ward is done (allowing Cox to comfortably prepare for the slot position going forward). I love the lineup of Cully - Cox - Johnson!

IIRC Johnson #36 was the one replacing Ward not Cox. Cox #20 stayed on the outisde the whole game.

That was my point! We played a 6'2" rookie CB inside so that we can keep Cox outside (although I prefer the opposite). The game was not on locally so I only saw it via the spots bar but can you guys with DVR and coaches film confirm this? I thought I saw him line up outside a few times as well?

I just re-watched Johnsons snaps. The only time I saw him line up outside was on this 1st and 20 in the 2nd.

FYI: They are showing a breakdown of how "Eli" played against us in NFLN at the 2Q 8:29 mark and it shows Johnson outside, Cox in the nickle, etc. So, it looks like Fangio moved Johnson around a lot...outside, slot, on a blitz, etc. Impressive!

That was the Borland interception. Johnson lined up inside.

Thank you so much for this. And how epic it would it be to have a 6'2" slot CB with long arms who could match up against guys like Bennett and Graham better?
I like this Guy's Game Dontay Johnson!! I never heard of the guy before the draft but its turned out to be a hell of a pick. Balke has been good in the middle to late rounds.

He's been good in just about every round… Don't let previous bias sway you

Assuming you are right, Donte did a great job on that goal line play, it's amazing how undrafted guys like Ian Williams, Dobbs (now with seadderall), and Boone just play flat out better than some of the drafted guys.

Shoot, if we could just trade our 1st down and get a whole bunch of 5th and 6th rounders like Lynch and so on, man we would never have to worry about the cap.

I hope we'll get some results on the offensive side with Patton and Ellington. But I have to admit, Stevie, anquan, and Lloyd have been pretty good free agent acquisitions and have been decent this year. Maybe we can get Rice to *unretire*

Seriously. It says a ton about the scouting department and their due dilegence. Just trade back that 1st every time for extra 2nd-5th round picks every year!
This guy was balling, you go back and look at that Eric Reid pick, Dontae was the one who brought the pressure, and was 0.6 seconds away from sacking Eli on that play.

His first snap in the Dallas game (in week one) was hammering Dez Bryant's ankles to the ground before the 1st down line, he did this same thing to Boldin in training camp, and it erupted in a fight. This kid has a real dirty/aggressive streak to him, I love it.

I'm surprised Johnson's not getting any praise for that 4th down stop on our goalline stand. Borland only got the chance to make that INT because Johnson drove to the ball, causing the deflection. Otherwise, the backup TE would've probably made the catch for the TD. Props to him (and to Borland, of course!). I'd like to see more of Johnson. He's been impressive so far.

Anyone who knows anything gives all the credit to Dontae for that. The pick actually cost us a few yards. We ended up on the 2 yard line and an incomplete would have put us on the 4 yard line. I am glad we picked it anyway just to plie on the number on INT's for our team and for Eli as well.

Don't give up on Ward yet. He has yet to play a game when we have had a pass rush. It makes a huge difference. It's no coincedence that we get a pass rush and suddenly we have 5 picks in the game and Eli is lucky that last duck he threw up for grabs to avoid a sack by Aldon wasn't pick #6.

It is great to see so mcuh production from our rookie class and we have 5 more redshirting for next season.

Well, in Ward's defense, apparently he was playing all season with a broken foot. Not saying that he didn't make mistakes, but, he may have not belonged on the field period.
Cool deal that Borland gave his 2nd INT ball to Johnson. Well done, son, well done!
