Most Underrated 49ers Rookie

Dontae Johnson

Dime cornerback. Slot cornerback. Special teams gunner. This fourth-round draft pick has come up big in all three spots. What makes Johnsons rise so special is how he wasnt a lock to make the 53-man roster. San Francisco's cornerback depth was impressive in the preseason. Johnson was able to work hard and carve out a role on defense. He has been playing as the teams nickel cornerback and has had big defensive moments this season.

What led to the decision to move CB Dontae Johnson inside?

Just thought that it was the best way for us to play with the guys that we had left available.

We will analyze that every week and feel like where's the best place for him to play, factoring in where is the best place for Cox to play, too. It is interchangeable.

Assuming you are right, Donte did a great job on that goal line play, it's amazing how undrafted guys like Ian Williams, Dobbs (now with seadderall), and Boone just play flat out better than some of the drafted guys.

Shoot, if we could just trade our 1st down and get a whole bunch of 5th and 6th rounders like Lynch and so on, man we would never have to worry about the cap.

I hope we'll get some results on the offensive side with Patton and Ellington. But I have to admit, Stevie, anquan, and Lloyd have been pretty good free agent acquisitions and have been decent this year. Maybe we can get Rice to *unretire*

Well, in Ward's defense, apparently he was playing all season with a broken foot. Not saying that he didn't make mistakes, but, he may have not belonged on the field period.

Wardsxcuses .

This guy was balling, you go back and look at that Eric Reid pick, Dontae was the one who brought the pressure, and was 0.6 seconds away from sacking Eli on that play.

His first snap in the Dallas game (in week one) was hammering Dez Bryant's ankles to the ground before the 1st down line, he did this same thing to Boldin in training camp, and it erupted in a fight. This kid has a real dirty/aggressive streak to him, I love it.

lol, that was great, I loved that chit... this dude ain't scurred. 49ers got a keeper and I wouldn't doubt that he'll be a starter next year.

Agree with this for sure. With a full offseason with the coaching staff he should be ready to start no doubt.
Another excellent Baalke pick.

Whoever the scouts are that find the D-backs are - they should get a raise.

Don't you think it's a little early to be talking like this?

I actually think Joyner is a better slot CB, but Ward could be a really good safety. And Bethea's contract gets pretty big in the next couple of years; Niners may need to cut or trade him for cap space when Aldon's contract comes up for extension or gets the franchise tag.

All that said, I wanted Bradley Roby.

Those picks would've been nice, but it hurts less when they were taken ahead of the Niners' pick.
He's a closer. Thats the second game he ended.

Good find trent.

If we continue to get such great picks in the later rounds, might as well trade down that first pick and get more lower round picks. Point I'm saying is I agree with the folks who say our scouts are doing a great job finding talent in the later rounds.
Another good game. I'm loving it
