I still like Reid out there he's a leader and had a injury free year...he was laying some hits this year and will look much better having bethea next to him again.

If Ward can play outside we might have a really solid secondary group.

Reid doesn't have the pain threshold to lay the wood each time he gets the opportunity. He clearly gets rattled when he does make contact.

I also think if Bowman is close to his pre injury form that will do wonders for the defense as well. When healthy he has that ability like Ray Lewis, I think to raise the level of play of everyone around him.

uhm. he is a great vet. teacher and locker room guy and can still get the job done at safety. i always had hoped we keep him. next year at this time. if a couple of the kids pan out.. then we have a different conversation about him in my opinion

The 49ers have not settled on Ward being moved permanently to cornerback...

"If I can train him at corner, it's going to prepare him to play other positions that might not be as taxing physically," Hafley said. "He's getting a lot of reps right there to help him out with all the man coverage and stuff. But we're going to play him where he best fits.

"I think he's such a good athlete and he's so versatile, I think you're going to see him all over the place..."

My early guess is:

So we'll use various combinations including moving Ward to SS and the Slot: Robinson and Johnson outside in press against bigger, physical WR's...Acker and Brock inside in the nickel/dime and Tartt as the nickel/dime SS up in the box.
