I do...he had one bad practice but came back the next practice and was the MVP. That to me is a sign of youth and what we saw from the entire defense last year (#1 at home, crap on the road). But he's been playing exclusively at the slot since late last year. He and Redmond have very similar skill sets and now, Davis is another competing for the job. It's probably the toughest job on defense and takes a unique set of skills (hence the Redmond pick). Reaser, like Redmond, had a major injury but unlike Redmond, is fully healthy and got some NFL snaps last year. That said, Redmond may have the better upside after a year and at worst, adds competition and depth there which allows O'Neil to move Ward around and get our best 11 on the field.
Yeah hope you right with Reaser personally I'm not very confident in out nickle back if Ward get's put outside. Like you said It's probably the toughest job on defense and takes a unique set of skills...I would feel much better if Redmond can come back 100% and compete for the job.
Oh for sure. In yesterday's article, it doesn't even sound like Ward is considered a permanent fixture at CB. In fact, it sounded more like he's being trained there to hone his skills for a less physically demanding position (i.e. SS). But by training him there, if he's lights out there and can play press, he'll have earned it...if not, O'Neil now can utilize Ward in all 3 spots (SS, CB and slot CB). We'll see similar flexibility with Tartt and many others. He went on to say that, like last year, each week may be a different starting personnel group based on the matchups, similar to how we matched up both Johnson and Cromartie for press against the Falcons and then never saw that combination again despite the massive success they had...b/c every week after that, they played against different types of WR's outside? (that would be my guess as to what Mangini was thinking).
