Same. Unlike a player like Tank, DJ has actually shown something when he's been given the opportunity. Unfortunately, he must be one of the worst practice players ever because, regardless of how well he plays in games, he always finds himself relegated to the bench.

I still don't understand how he didn't get more playing time after locking down Julio Jones 2 years ago.

I couldn't agree more. Plus if he wins the spot, it give Witherspoon a full year to bulk up some, refine his technique, and compete next year... his college coach said he needs 18 months to develop anyhow.

Just have to like such a deep backfield, and so young!
I never thought Dontae Johnson was properly utiliized by the last two staffs. I believe he has starters ability.
thl did a great breakdown of him. In this scheme, under this coaching, DJ is in prime position to lock down that #2.
Yea I'm on the fence with this guy. Really haven't seen much to make me say he's really starter material. Every time you look up guys are beating him out. Let's see how this competition shakes out.
baewatch.

Don't see why not. Always liked him.

Good coaching makes a hell of a difference. We'll see his true potential this year. I'm with you, if he balls out and pushes Witherspoon to the bench for 1 year, better for everybody.

It's the same DB coach as last year correct? I'm sure Saleh/Shanahan decide who ends up starting but I'm sure the DB coach has a lot of say as well.
If this guy can prove to be a solid #2 corner than our Secondary and overall D could really help come together and be real solid

Hafley...good call Lucky. Let's see if, under this scheme, if he sees DJ as a more natural fit... good sign he's taking first team reps early.

Gut predictions?

DJ starts week 1 is mine cause the good matchup with Carolina. Probably ride hot hand as soon as game kicks off.
I really like Johnson, but I like Redmond & Robinson more. With Ward moving back to safety (I think) it's nice to have 3 (possibly 4 with Whitherspoon) good CBs.

I love robinson.. really like Redmond and we'll see if he beats out Williams, who when healthy was a great rated slot CB. Hoping DJ can give us something good this year re-signed or not.
