Besides his rookie year this is 1st year hes getting a lot of snaps..and he's been the best CB on this team which isn't saying much but I'd resign him for cheap and let him compete to start or have good depth..

I dunno mang. Id easily take Spoon right now over him and hes barely gotten in there but IMO hes gonna be a keeper as legit #2 at worst. Id still love to go all in Trumaine and re-sign DJ as the first outside CB off the bench. Or if Ward loses to Colbert he can back up all spots in the secondary and we move on from DJ.

Yeah if Ward gets beat out by Colbert which I don't think is far fetched I wouldn't resign DJ but that's prob the only scenario, like I said I like the idea of him competing with Ahkello for the number 2 and the loser being the 1st off the bench, could never have too many CBs who can play..
This guy is crap! Let him go at seasons end. Seriously he gets turned around more than a $2 hooker.
I think he should stay. He isn't amazing but I think he is good depth once we get some decent starting corners. Plus I don't think he will break the bank.

i feel bad for this guy because Baalke saw him as a CB when he really is a backup FS at best..
He's been here long enough. 'We don't have a starter in Dontae, but a backup. He has had some good plays, some good games and then has had ones that were not so good..ok, they were bad. YOu saw AC covering receivers. That is what we need. His hand is broken but he will start next yr. That kid has showed a lot in a short time but enough to shoe you what a DB is supposed to look like. Then hand thing was just a setback...ok, a curse. Better this yr than next. Meantime Lynch keep looking for guys bringing them in and running them thru. It looks like Spoon has the knowledge and physical ability to stay with receivers. He starts next yr....if he doesn't change his mind a la Borland. Those two guys are fantastic finds as long as spoon stays put for at least 4 yrs, but those are the kind of guys we need.

The problem with a backup like dontae is if you have him, then you will use him. And he cannot consistently cover. AC can It looked in a small sample size that spoon can. That is what the guys look like that we want. Does DOntae look anywhere near eihter of those two ? Nope. So we keep looking. One more DB with talent would sure help out that D with 3 bona fide starters back there. Then we can get one later in draft if lynch thinks he has the tools. But we need essentially 2 or 3 more quality backups as we have none on the squad. Going wht guys who can play but not well...that is baalke players. Ok, but not good enough.

We started in Feb with 4 starters. Joe and Trenton, Carlos and Buck. We have since then added anotehr 10 starters, give or take a couple Could say as many as 12 new starters or as few as 8 or 9, depending on who you agree is starter quality. Solly, Reuben(big ques is can he stay healthy), Brieda, TT, KIttle, the Douzable, maybe Coyle ,Garcon, Marquise is a ?, which is 9. To that i would add AA tho i know there would be arguments there....but put an ER out there and watch him go. Also will add Blair, Mitchell, and DJ. I like all those guys as starter or in rotation. Elvis but how many more yrs. Not many. So my count is 13 starters plus the 4 we have as bonafide starters. 13 plus 4 is 17 starters if you include some still not certain. Then the big piece of the puzzle...FR QB...and i think we have on ready to go and one excellent FR QB in training. ...or maybe CJ wins the competiton. That gives us 18 good starters, when we began with 4. Not bad for one yr...actually less. And the big one, FR QB we got an answer from two different directions. In truth a starter, a good one, and a top flite back up with in time will become a starter. No matter how you slice it, this has been one successful yr. Ws., not so much. But next yr is going to be a lot more talented than we have been in over 4 yrs.

It is pretty easy to see where we burn our FA picks and our draft picks.

Edge Rusher is right at the top. Has to be a bona fide stater.
#1 WR...is a must.
OG. OC. OG....hope they all come in FA. Then draft guys up to rd 3 for potentail rotational OLs.
DBs, we need 2 starters, and 3 or 4 bakcup starters in rotation.
Finally we need depth anywhere. OL , DBs, LBs, DL, RB and a couple WRs who can become staters. A DB who goes 6 ft 2 inches would be really nice, but he has to be really good cover guy to boot. Compared to needing virtually 2 teams of starters, we have come a long way, and at qb we have not one but two great choices. ]

So we could keep dontae, but we are not looking to stock our team with fair to middlin's. We need bona fide starters. And two more DBs would be on the dance card....just as long as both are genuine starters.

Youre right. We need 46 all pros active on game day. No room for mediocrity on the bench.
The question is gonna be whether Lynch can find a couple of late round backup CBs. I wouldn't expect DJ to be signed early in free agency.

YOU must be a fan of DJ.. but bro, as a CB, we just don't have room for his talent.. for each time he's on the field and trying to cover someone, those QBs will find him..

What are people's thoughts on Dontae after yesterday's game?
He got subbed after being burned a few times correct?
Awful game for him. To be fair to him, he hasn't been this bad all year, but he was going up against a Top 3 to Top 5 NFL receiver and was clearly the inferior player. Then again, Hopkins has done that to a lot of guys this year.

Johnson is one of those guys who's "not quite a #2 CB" but talented enough to keep around. He's just not much of a playmaker. I expect they look to replace him in the off-season.
