IMO, Because when they throw Baalke under the bus Gamble will be ready to step up after a sham search for a new GM.

Because it shows a clear succession. If Baalke is fired we know who the next GM is. Much like in Baltimore.

That would be a case of ownerhsip undermining the current GM and I cannot see how that could be beneficial. DeCosta and Newsome have been a team for a long time, I don't think the owner is hedging his bets with DeCosta and I hope Jed is not hedging his bets with Gamble. I hope it is a partnership relationship.

Gamble & Baalke have been with the 49ers a long time as well. So if it works out it could very much be like Baltimore.

Gamble & Baalke have been with the 49ers a long time as well. So if it works out it could very much be like Baltimore.
But I don't think the ravens put DeCosta in his current role to be insurance in case they decide to fire Newsome.
