If the Niners trade for Bell that means it is a virtual lock they cut McKinnon in the offseason. You may not care. You may even want that to happen. But I think you'd be hard pressed to convince yourself Shanahan wants that to happen -- particularly since the Niners already ate the worst part of McKinnon's contract and he moves on to a much more palatable annual salary in 2019.

This is exactly right.
You can't trade for Bell unless you're giving him a deal that he wants. If he doesn't want to be a rental for the Steelers, why would he want to be one with the Niners?
Only way he comes here (and plays) is if he gets a long term deal.

Maybe not cut him next year bc you're right his cap hit was over 10 million while next year it's over 4.. I kno Bells cap hit would be around 13 million so yeah that a lot for the position combined but they have the money available..imagine Bell, McKinnon and Brieda next year ! Crazy thoughts..

That would be so f**ked up to cut jet, seems like a good dude and I want him to succeed here when he finally got his chance to be the featured back. Now if we struggle at the rb position for a few weeks and forced to go Rodgers mode with 40 plus passes per game then we're talking.

Only way I do it is if the Steelers would accept McKinnon and a later draft pick(not a pick in the first 3 rounds) for him. If not, I'd pass.

We can offer not to run him into the ground, which is what the Steelers apparently want to do.
You can't sign him to a long term deal. That deadline already passed in mid July. What you could do is franchise tag him for a third time or transition tag him in the offseason.
Anyone trading for him is essentially trading for a rental.

Funny coming from olinemen who can play up to their mid 30's while bell has has a shorter nfl life, is a cow bell who does everything and who they plan to run him to the ground knowing he's a rental this year. They should've paid him a few years ago, Bell isn't at fault for doing this. Secure the bag because at the end of the day your teammates aren't gonna give you their money to support yourself and your family. If they think James Connor is so legit why cry for bell?

Who trades for a guy coming off a freshly torn acl? Making top 5 rb money who has yet to prove he can be the main guy? Steelers supposedly think Connor is the next guy so no way they accept this, it'll be strictly draft picks. I'll give them ward tho 2 possible rentals traded for each other and add a pick

I think there is some personal stuff going on. Usually players don't come out like that unless there other issues at play. Supposedly he promised guys that he'd be there for the regular season, now he isn't even taking their calls.

Quite possible, a lot of players usually inspire their fellow players to get paid

Nope.
If Pittsburgh can find a much cheaper replacement in the 3rd than so can we.
