Games Studied: 2016, with Cleveland Browns, vs. Cincinnati (twice), Buffalo, San Diego
His game is in his mobility. He is not going to overwhelm you with his power. He gets position, balances and seals.
He doesn't play with much pop. He likes to get his hands inside, then work to steer the defender.
It was surprising how well he played against Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins. Copper handled his quickness and power well in the game. He also did a nice job of passing off twists and stunts that the Bengals tried to throw at him.
Well there we have it, better in a zone blocking scheme where he can move. Played in the wrong scheme so let's see how he does in a system the suits him. That's what I like about Shanahan, he studies a player to make sure he fits
Yep. Looks at philm before looking at stats.

Getting to the second level is something Richburg is good at....HMMMMM, its like someone has a plan.....

Look at his strengths from the draft:

STRENGTHS

Athletic guard, but with some girth in his lower body to anchor against oncoming tackles. Tough to beat in pass protection, possesses foot quickness, bend, and arm extension to mirror. Excellent mobility behind the line, regularly pulls to the left and right. Excellent at adjusting quickly to negate moving targets on the second level. Springs out of his stance to reach linebackers in the run game or to jump inside of tackles to seal off a rushing lane. Used as a personal protector on a moving pocket. Shows good hand strength, popping his defender quickly off the snap and getting inside hand position. Flashes some attitude when challenged, maintaining contact and chasing his man out of the play. Quick recovery speed to get up after a cut block. Good pad level and surge coming out of his stance. Gets vertical movement on his man on base and double blocks. Constantly works his feet and swings his hips to get position on reach blocks. Rolls his hips through contact, and works to place his body between his man and the ball carrier.

Aren't those ideal for an outside zone Guard?

The thing that's there IMO is (1) a dearth of line talent across the NFL and (2) all NFL teams partially relying on their draft scouting for bringing in FAs.

Long story short, highly rated draft picks are allowed to suck it up while bouncing around the league for MUCH longer than are lower rated draft picks, and that's particularly true at positions like OL for which there's not an oversupply of fresh talent coming in every year.

As a one year look-see it doesn't bother me at all, but teams go overboard with it too (e.g. the Seahawks mission over the last two years to sign every bust from the top 10 of the 2013 draft -- kinda funny in that as far as top 10 draft busts go we beat them to Cooper --who was a 2013 draft bust who went #7 -- and within 90 minutes of that they signed Fluker -- a 2013 draft bust who went #11, and to pair with their 2013 draft bust FAs of Joekel, Jordan, and Mingo (who went #s 2, 3, and 6 in that draft).

He did go #7 in the draft for a reason.

The problem is that in the NFL he has been highly injury prone and hasn't really played with the fire you want to see from a guy picked that high. He's been the bullied rather than the bully out on the field.

If Jordan stays clean, he might be a really good pick up for them. 5 games, 4 sacks, and 1 forced fumble
I won't be surprised if this guy and Tomlinson end up starting

We're f**ked
Cooper has some ability...you don't start 13 games for the Cowboys on their OL without it. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this 1-yr signing. If he outplays Tomlinson & Garnett, then good for him. If not, he's an experienced b/u.

Skills and athleticism are there but along with his injury issues, Cooper was repeatedly called out for playing soft.

He's more of a finesse type.

Damn that Bill Walsh and his finesse offense. I guess we'll see, but maybe he was miss cast and not asked to play to his strengths, and that now changes. In Kyle we trust.

I've been saying all along, imo, this off season is all about getting players that fit Kyle's offense, even if that isn't apparent talent upgrades on the conventional scale. Kyle is going to get players that will allow him to run his offense, instead of changing it to fit an RGIII or a Carlos Hyde. That's the goal. Let Kyle be Kyle, and show us what he can do without some schmuck telling him who to draft, trade for or play for the first time in his life.
I see no negatives to this signing. At worse, he's a better backup than Beadles.

He could also look real good between Richburg and Staley or Brown. He was better than any of our interior OL last season.
Would od liked a longer deal but, love the signing!

He may wind up a bust and be cut, however, the entire OL in NE was not good when he was there. Next season, IIRC, they brought Dante Scarnecia (sp) back and the entire OL improved a lot.

I don't remember him in AZ. Phoenix does.

It is all about the coaching with a guy like this. On past performance he will be competing for the back-up guard role. Too much is expected of OL coming out of college. Only the very top guys wind up starting the first season. Maybe that is the case with this guy or maybe he is gone by August 15.

Good point on Beadles. He's even better at guard than Kilgore. I see zero wrong with this signing, actually like it. Him, Laken, Garnett and whoever we draft battles for the starting jobs
I like the 1 year deal. Dude stays injured and is kinda soft. He's an upgrade over what we have though. Good move. We need the depth.

Nah he sucks. Awful pass protector.

Did you see him stand up Buckner and push him back during pass protection?
