OL Jonathan Cooper

Have either of the Shanahan's EVER drafted a guard in the 1st in the past 25 years of them being in football?

There is literally no chance we go guard in round 1.
One positive about Cooper is he has played LG and RG.

The man dresses well, I'll say that.

How many years has little Shanny had control of the draft...1.

Yeah, same with Tomlinson. I'm thinking Garnett, Cooper and Tomlinson battle it out for the two starting spots at guard and a draft pick in there competing as well and possibly starting in 2019. At least we have our anchor and stud center with Richburg and we have two very good OT's though Staley is getting up there and there are some concerns about Trent Brown's durability.

My reply was in response to someone saying we wouldn't draft a guard in rounds one, two, or three. Not sure why you're going so hard on the 1st round thing. haha

That being said, you can't completely rule out anything based on past history.

Yep. This sums it all up.

One of the (many) nice things about Lynchahan's openness is that they're very overt in making it clear that they like to double at need positions in both FA and the draft.

A one year deal for Cooper is basically protection against the draft not falling their way on the lineman they're interested in. Maybe the draft doesn't fall their way on OG and he beats out Tomlinson or Magnuson, or maybe the draft does fall their way and he's fighting it out with Tomlinson and Magnuson to not be cut.
Exactly that.

You don't want to spend a mid-round draft pick on a guy just for depth. Bringing in depth now saves a pick but it certainly does NOT mean they would pass on either Nelson or Wynn if they are available.

These make the most sense to me

agree. we are far from being set on the o line in the guard position. i love how so many think this guy is the missing link. there is a reason why he has went through alot of teams. he may be halfway decent but we are not done here. i think the team will draft a guard in round two or three.

Tomlinson = Cooper

2 former 1st round busts.

Cooper is thought to be a much better zone player than either Tomlinson or Garnett, so he could be a perfect fit. But still...three first round picks that have underperformed...

also the coaches know these players and line better. i am amused by those to proclaim we will never draft a guard in round one or two. five minutes before it happened. i bet those same people were saying. there is no way we will trade kilgore

"IF" and, IMO won't happen, Nelson fell to us at #9 - we'd jump right on it.
