I know a lot of us are excited about Earl Thomas, but with the strong possibility that he goes to Dallas, who are the best alternatives?
FA
Adrian Amos, S, Chicago Bears
LaMarcus Joyner, S, LA Rams
Tre Boston, S, Arizona Cardinals
Amos only had 2 int on a strong defense last year, but he's younger and should have strong coaching from the Bears staff.
Stealing Joyner had 1 int last year but he would be a double wammy, degrading the Rams while the Niners upgrade.
Who are other alternative options to ET?

Amos is the clear cut favorite among those three. Top three in coverage. Also, Chicago is very tight against the cap so we might be able to outbid them.
Joyner is a good run defender but weak in coverage - pass.
Boston is better in coverage but AZ has a ton of cap room and a lot of trash to throw out before they would ever let him leave. Only way he comes to SF is if he just prefers it...or if Lynch throws an ungodly amount of cash his way.
Clinton-Dix is available but it will be very expensive to get him away from Washington.
Therein lies the problem of FA - if you rely on it too heavily it will kill you cap very quickly. In each of these cases, we will have to overpay in order to get the guy. So while that is OK in a case or two, the contract length must be short enough so it doesn't kill you in the future.

Everyone is meh after Earl Thomas for free safety.
Adrian Amos is a good player from what I've watched. Not sure how he fits in this scheme because Fangio plays a lot more 2-shell looks. He seems like a thumper. Maybe more of a box safety(SS) in this scheme. I think we're okay with Tartt and Harris at SS.

That's the key...fit. It's kind of a big deal for Kyle/Saleh.
Outside of ET, everyone else is a SS. Unless Woods influences more 2-shell designs. We did see that more towards the end of the year.
SS's should be pretty cheap though for FA minus ET who should get north of $10M.

FWIW, Amos is listed as a FS on Spotrac.

See this is my issue, I always thought Amos was more of a SS...what about Ha Ha? maybe Mathieu?

The safeties in Fangio's system are interchangeable, so whatever he's listed as doesn't help much. Someone needs to dive into the tape. I'm too lazy lol.

Haha is one of the worst tackling safeties in the league. A hard pass from me. We have enough bad tackling DBs.

Curtis Riley - 6 ft. 195 pounds, 4 INT's in 2018 for the Giants. Can anyone tell me what PFF grades him at?

If we can't get Thomas, I wouldn't use the FA safety market to supplement our team. Trade or draft.

Surprised about the love for Mathieu among NFL fans. Feels like its motivated by his nickname and not reality. He's about to be on his 3rd team in as many years.

This, he was ok last year, but he's lost a lot of speed with all the leg injuries. It was like watching Bowman before he got benched.

63 coverage, 37 run def, 69 pass rush on only 13 snaps.
1049 snaps total. How could anyone be that bad in run defense and stay on the field? College scouting report said he takes "terrible" angles in run support. Looks like he still hasn't learned.

Clinton-Dix is a good Option. He has 3 Interception and 79,3 PFF Grade.
