So on to my next, and probably last version of a mock draft. Here it goes......
Niners trade #7 overall to the Titans, and in return receive #15 and #45. At #15, the Niners select
1.15: Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State: At best, he is a dominant RT that revives the run game. At worst, he is a dominant RG that revives the run game. Chip Kelly likes to run the ball. Trent Baalke likes to run the ball. Conklin is probably the best run-blocking OT in this draft. His pass pro against speed rushers may force him inside at the pro level, but he will be a starter Day 1. Great combine and great college tape.
Niners trade #37 and #68 to the Texans and receive #22 overall. At #22, the Niners select
1.22: Josh Doctson, WR, TCU: At this point in the draft, you can expect a run on WRs. It is debatable which WR is tops, but for me it Josh Doctson. He has great size, great hands, and an insane vertical. He speed and acceleration are excellent for his size, and he runs great routes. He looks like a WR1 and more athletic version of Deandre Hopkins. Seems like a Chip Kelly type of WR.
2.45: Joshua Garnett, OG, Stanford: Seems to be a WZ consensus that Garnett is a beast, and I can't help but to agree. He mauls in the run game, swallowing defenders whole. And he can get out in space and block moving targets in the open field. This guy can wreck your life.
4.105: Dak Prescott, QB, Miss St.: Has a great NFL frame and NFL level athleticism. Has a lot of the tools necessary to become a quality starting QB, including the arm, but needs some intensive tutelage from QB extraordinaire Chip Kelly. He needs a year or two to develop, but his potential is pretty great.
As you've noticed by now, Im going offensive heavy in this mock. The goal is to reestablish a run game in SF, and to try and uncover some talented playmakers capable of scoring TDs. 14pts/g is not going to cut it in the Kelly regime.
4.133: Rashard Robinson, CB, LSU: Questionable character but insane measurables. Tall, long-limbed CBs with good speed will always get a chance in the NFL, and on my team.
5.142: Adam Gotsis, DE, Georgia Tech: Has all the physical traits you want in a 34 DE. Long arms and natural strength. The addition of another Aussie would undoubtedly boost our merchandise sales, so there's that. Honestly, a decent athlete with great measurables would help in the D-line rotation that is bound to happen with Kelly's coaching style.
5.145: Blake Martinez, LB, Stanford: Thumper of an LB that can contribute immediately to special teams and would give depth to the ILB core.
5.174: Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose St.: Typical smallish Sproles type RB that will help with returns on special teams. Has elite quickness and speed, and a coach that knows how to use him correctly.
6.178: DeVondre Campbell, LB, Minnesota: Great size and speed qualities for a pass rushing LB. He's physically talented but doesn't play football well yet. Needs major coaching, but has NFL traits.
6.207: Vernon Adams, QB, Oregon: He's highly competitive and played well at Oregon against top competition. He's small, but has good field vision and awareness, and has good mobility.
6.211: Alonzo Russell, WR, Toledo: 6'4 with sub 4.5 speed and super long arms. He never put it all together in college, and may be a bit of a slow learner, but if the lights come on, he could be a monster. Should at least push our current WRs on roster.
6.213: Drew Kaser, P, Texas A&M: Booming right leg. I think we need to push Pinion. He wasn't all that impressive last season and he was kind of gifted his starting spot. He needs a legit challenger.
The overall plan was to correct this awful offense and try to put more points on the board. Establishing the run game is paramount for this team, and an investment with Conklin and Garnett is warranted. They are the top to run blocking linemen in the draft, and should solidify the line as a strength instead of weakness. The WR core also concerns me a great deal, which is why I moved up for Doctson. I see WR1-Superstar potential in him, and his style of play seems very much suited for Kelly. Im excited to see the brand of football Kelly installs here, and he will need some new weapons to execute it. Thats what this draft is about for me. Getting Kelly the type of players he needs in order to install his brand of football here with the Niners. The defense has received the majority of investment in the last few drafts, and Im going to trust that investment will pay off this season. Its time that the offense stops being neglected and gets early round picks in this years draft.
