Jreff22 Mock v.2

This is going to be trade intensive with a lot of moving to acquire additional top 100 picks. I will go off the assumption that Garrett is the first player taken, Cousins is not traded, and Lynch becomes very aggressive early on. Some of these players are carryovers from the v.1 mock back in October.

Major Free Agent Acquisitions
Alshon Jeffery WR
Brian Hoyer QB
Matt Schaub QB
Dont'a Hightower OLB
Kevin Zeitler OG

Resign
Jeremy Kerley WR
Ray-Ray Armstrong OLB
Phil Dawson K

Round one will probably have every fan yell out a collective son of a b***h when the Browns pick is announced. By recent comments, I'm expecting Shanny to pass on the current crop of early QB's. So the question becomes, who needs and will trade for a QB? The only team within striking distance to leapfrog the Bears is the Jets. If rumors are true, they really like Trubisky. With a full cupboard of picks this works out for both teams. So we move from pick 2 to 6. This should net us their 2nd and 3rd (comp) in 2017 along with a 1st in 2018. At this point we should have two players sitting at a need for a team that could move up...Philly. Wentz needs a real target and both Williams and Davis should be sitting in our lap, we trade back again. We will receive Philly's 1st round and 2nd rounder for this move.

Now we can finally see some action...

More in-depth analysis will be coming tomorrow. Its late and I'm up early tomorrow morning.

Round 1
Pick 14 or 15 (Decided by a coin toss)
Derek Barnett DE
6'3 265 Tennessee

Our pass rush specialist! While I'm still holding out hope for MG, we do need a backup plan. Barnett is relentless and will create chaos for the QB, something we've missed for a few years now. He's a day 1 starter and will be a nightmare along with Buckner. This is need 1B and we get in filled along with additional early picks. This would be a win for Lynch.

Round 2
Pick 34
Jarrad Davis OLB *carryover from previous mock*
6'2 238 Florida

The one kid I wanted to see at the Senior Bowl and Combine lol. Davis is a tone setter, hits with authority, can work in space, and can blitz. He can play both OLB and ILB so we have real insurance for Lord Bowman. I see him taking over the WILL from Armstrong rather easily this year. He has everything you could look for from a LB this early. His Pro Day will be huge.

Pick 39 (From NYJ)
Lynch gets a call from an old friend needing to move up. Denver is in desperate need of OT help and wants the 39th pick. We accept and receive Denver's pick at 51 along with pick 101 (comp).

Pick 43 (From Philly)
Cooper Kupp WR
6'2 198 Eastern Washington

Kid doesn't really need any introduction. Hands, hands, hands with great instincts and IQ. Will need a little time to adjust but has the talent to play outside and shine. Great young talent to have ready for the eventual franchise QB.

Pick 51 (From Denver)
Dalvin Tomlinson DT
6'3 312 Alabama

While Mitchell was a good pickup, he's not going to be a long term dominant player. He plugs a hole but more is needed. Tomlinson isn't flashy but he's a run stuffing machine with little wear on the tires. Very intelligent and from one of the best programs in the country. Between Mitchell and Tomlinson, the gaping holes from last year should vanish.

Round 3
Pick 66
Ryan Anderson OLB
6'2 258 Alabama

Say hello to another Bama workhorse. Anderson has the size and skill to excel at the SAM, and at this point its great value. Even though I have us signing Hightower, we need depth due to his medical concerns. Anderson can work in traffic, rush the passer, and is a sure tackler. Comparison is actually to Brooks so that actually works well for us. He will need some time and refinement but he wont be forced to start early. If he lasts this long its a no brainer. Will eventually join Bowman and Davis in a starting role. It might seem like overkill but this is the kind of investment you need 3-4 years down the line.

Pick 101 (From Denver)
Justin Evans S
6'0 193 Texas A&M

Rangy safety that can come up or play in center field. Very aggressive but will need to learn patience. Fast and shifty enough to cover the slot if need be. With Bethea and Tartt not locking down any positions, we need somebody versatile enough to play both FS and SS.

Pick 107 (From NYJ)
Nathan Peterman QB
6'3 225 Pittsburgh

Shannys new toy. Has all the physical talent and mental ability. Needs time and coaching to clean up the issues. Might be long term or might be a backup, QB is still in play next year so nothing is guaranteed to him.

Round 4
Pick 109
Ryan Switzer WR *carryover from previous mock*
5'9 179 North Carolina

Mr. Swiss Army Knife. Switzer fits the mold of NE style WR's and wouldn't surprise me if they were already looking at him. He can do a lot of things well, isn't afraid of contact, and is a ST gem. Undersized and while not incredibly fast, he's shifty with sure hands. This is the pick that move's Patton and Ellington of the roster permanently

Pick 143 (Comp pick)
Connor Harris ILB
5'11 241 Lindenwood

Every year I root for a mid round ILB that only goes at 110%. Special teams will be his ticket to making the roster. With any luck the old names will be released and this kid becomes the primary backup to Bow.

Round 5
Pick 146
Jordan Leggett TE
6'5 250 Clemson

A bit low for Leggett but he's going to have to shake off the lazy image he's known for. Very athletic and when motivated, plays at an all star level...but can he stay motivated? Will need to learn how to block and stay interested for 60 minutes. Its a gamble but right now we are a s**t team that needs talent.

Pick 161
Elijah McGuire RB
5'11 209 Louisiana-Lafayette

Small school overachiever that does a lot of things well but nothing really great. The competition behind Hyde is rather lackluster so he has a shot. Can catch out of the backfield and is a willing blocker. If he can hold onto the ball and follow directions he's already better than most of his competition.

Round 6
Pick 186
Josh Harvey-Clemons S
6'5 228 Louisville

Mr. Red flag. Athletic freak that has the talent to start in the NFL. Fluid athlete that will hit with a head full of steam. Needs to get better in the mental aspects but time and tape should correct some of those issues. If the problems are truly behind him, this kid could be what Tartt should be. He's big enough to cover TE's and fast enough to keep pace with WR's. Is his head screwed on right?

Pick 202
Xavier Woods S *carryover from previous mock*
5'11 219 Louisiana Tech

Another small school gem. Ball hawk skills that can provide more competition in the backfield. Will make his mark on special teams but could push for a primary backup role. Could use a year or two on the PS but the kid is worth keeping,

Round 7
Pick 209
Corey Levin OG/C
6'5 305 Tennessee-Chattanooga

Another late round OL to throw in the mix of what we currently have. The kid has played T,G,and C so he's versatile depending on needs. Will need time in the weight room and reps against real competition. Very athletic with strong hands. Probably another PS guy but an intriguing prospect.

This is a lot of movement and picks, but we have a lot of positions that need immediate upgrading and depth. If the brain trust can work the phones, we can easily move around and load up at multiple positions. This needs to be a home run if we are going to have any chance of actually looking competitive this year. I know the QB position is still a problem but with a 6 year deal, we don't have to panic right now. This draft (and FA) gives us enough talent and depth across the front 7. The days of Purcell and Wilhoite should be long gone. We get better and younger at the same time. Mistakes will be made but this core could be very dominant in a few years.
I still don't get the hype on Peterman. If he really does have all the tools, and he's as pro-ready as any of the top QBs (been said ALOT by others, not necessarily you), how is he always projected into the 3rd?

Because he doesn't ahve the size or the arm strength that gets the media attention. Nor the gaudy stats. From my perspective it's basically, that he is coming from a pro style offense that he flourished in. Couple that with what we know about shannahan and Peterman to me seems perfect.

Alot of people get caught up in the stats or physical traits and that often times is where teams fail by trying to stick a round peg in a square hole. Yeah another guy may seem more talented or what have you. But it has to also be about the fit.

So Peterman may not fit all offenses or there may be better options at other style offenses. But for Shannahan Peterman is PERFECT obviously in my opinion anyway.

It's more best available without a lot of gimmicks. He's one guy to start working on long term. Like I said, I'm fully assuming we address the position again the following year...most likely earlier than the 3rd or we sign Cousins.
This would go a long way toward resurrecting a floundering team. Love the emphasis on LB while still addressing WR and other needs. The DL and OLs seem pretty decent so your moves would be the next step. I also like the idea you are not making a major trade for a QB who is not a true FQB. Shanahan should take his time and find guys he can use temporarily, while he develops a young QB...which is what you have him doing in this mock! 'm not an expert on trades, so if that turns out alls good!

I think we have enough talent at CB, we are lacking the pass rush to help on the front end. I want to spend in FA but I don't want to splurge. Ward, Redmond, and Robinson are young and need to be tested.

If what I have laid out actually happened, we could focus on QB, WR, or CB in the first next year...or 2 out of 3.

We also have an easier schedule Next year so it shouldn't be so dire, at least on paper.

The owners, who are meeting in Irving, Texas, voted to allow compensatory draft picks to be traded beginning in 2017 and also voted to shorten the "legal tampering window" before free agency from three days to two.
