- 49ers aggressively look to trade in the draft. Adam Peters and Martin Meyhew both worked for franchises that traded frequently in the draft. Meyhew liked to trade back up in the 1st round. I don't think we go to that degree, but we follow a similar strategy.
- They have their eyes on certain prospects, and they trade around in order to get the right value for their targets.
- They do not aggressively go after QBs early. They mean what they say and let Hoyer start, but they look to add talent at the position on day 2.

Trade #1: 49ers trade #2 overall for Jaguars #4 and #36 picks. The Panthers rumors really heat up on the eve of the draft, and Coughlin pulls the trigger on the trade to snag their RB of the future in Fournette. 49ers take a value hit with this trade, but it makes sense.
Trade #2: 49ers trade #4 overall for the Browns #12 and #33 picks. The Titans are fielding calls to trade down and demand a lot of compensation for teams to leapfrog the Jets. Browns, Jets, Bills, and Chargers are all options for QB to trade up, and ironically they are all AFC teams. We offer the Browns a steal by letting them pay near the draft value chart for a QB, and we continue to stockpile picks.
Round 1: Christian McCaffrey - RB/WR - Stanford (via CLE thru PHI) | Lynch's mantra has been adding true pure football players. McCaffrey's ability to play RB, WR, and return duties allow him to immediately see the field on day 1. A formation of Garcon-Goodwin-Kerley-Robinson with McCaffrey rolling out will create so many mismatches to exploit. Plus, he also has ability as a zone RB and #2 behind Hyde.
Round 2: Takkarist McKinley - LEO - UCLA (via CLE) | 4.5 speed with 34 inch arms, McKinley has the attributes to be a solid LEO in our 4-3 under scheme. We badly need upgraded talent and McKinley delivers. Another in-state selection for Lynch. Additionally, he's got enough athletic ability to play the WILL position similar to Bruce Irvin or Cliff Avril type guys.
Round 2: Jarrad Davis - LB - Florida | Goodbye Ahmad Brooks, hello Jarrad Davis. In normal drafts, he'd be a 1st round lock. However, the defensive talent in this draft pushes him to early 2nd territory. He can play the WILL, MIKE, and SAM positions, but he'll start at SAM. I also like him a security blanket to Bowman if he suffers another injury.
Trade #3: 49ers trade #35 and #143 for Panthers #40 and #110. We basically trade down 5 spots and swap our comp #4 round pick for CAR's high 4th. Panthers trade up for Engram, adding an explosive weapon in their 2 WR, 2 TE sets. Engram can also flex as a WR, which is a need for them.
Round 2: Kevin King - CB - Washington (via CAR) | I don't buy the hype that King is a first rounder. He's a tall press corner that's physical, but he's not a good scheme fit for every defense. With Ward moving to FS, CB depth becomes an issue. He'll compete with Robinson and Brock for playing time.
Round 3: Nate Peterman - QB - Pitt | Some pundits compare him to Derek Carr. I compare him more to Cody Kessler. He's a smart game manager type QB with very good accuracy, pro style offense experience, and an average arm. He's a safe choice to develop as a top end backup with potential starter upside.
Round 4: Carlos Watkins - DT - Clemson | Run stuffer x10. He's excellent depth and a guy that could replace Mitchell in 2-3 years.
Round 4: Jordan Leggett - TE - Clemson (via CAR) | Back to back Clemson picks. HUGE upgrade to Celek at the #2 spot. He's a receiver, not a blocker. But we have McDonald, Paulsen, and Juszczyk as guys to block. Another chess piece for Shannahan to utilize on offense.
Round 5: Aviante Collins - T/G - TCU | Athletic tackle ideal for a zone scheme. We start thinking of the succession plan for Joe Staley.
Round 5: Jake Eldrenkamp - OG/C - Washington (via WAS) | Flex interior player that projects best in a zone scheme.
Trade #4: 49ers trade 6th (via BAL) for Jaguars Allen Hurns - WR. Hurns production dropped in 2016 and he's fallen out of the graces of the organization.
Round 7: Jeremy Clark - CB/S - Michigan (via CLE) | Redshirt in his first year, Clark has good size and strength for a safety conversion. With injury concerns to Reid and Ward, it's good to keep the pipeline going.
