2017 NCommand's Mock Draft

Admittedly, I don't watch college ball but I was able to predict Ward, Armstead & Buckner as our first round picks the past three years based on top team needs, Baalke's M.O. and in paying close attention to who we've visited with (and player research).

That said, this is a new regime. Given I don't have any tendencies from this FO yet, I'll rely on the other points noted. As usual, I'll refer to the pre-draft visit tracker, last updated on April 20th and, of course, MadDog49er's 253 Big Board as the foundation.

Past 49er drafts have proven to be an end result to a high number of picks associated with who we've met with (interviewed/worked out). These connections can often times shed some light into what direction we may end up going especially in the first 3 rounds.

I think there is a 70/30 chance we trade back but this mock will focus on staying pat. I say this because there seems to be a spatter of picks we're reviewing around where a small trade-back would occur (3rd-10th pick) as well as a number of picks in the second round (where we'd expect an extra pick). In an ideal world, we can take a trade-back and still get Trubisky while adding more draft capital. It's also important to note that if Cleveland does not pick ER Myles Garrett at #1, the world opens up. In that scenario we'd probably run to the podium to pick him BUT, we could also entertain QB-like trade-talks too. Enjoy!

Analysis:
*QB Mitch Trubisky - 6'2" 222 4.67. Top performer in the 40, 3-cone and 20-yard Shuffle drills. "Traits." Mitchell checks off all of Kyle's boxes: Quick Processer (can go fast in the pocket; can think fast and react; how quick their decision making is under duress); Pure Thrower (natural throwing motion; born to throw; effortless; to where he doesn't have to think about it ever); Natural Feel for the Game (automatic; feel and react); Smart (can handle the whole offense; handle it all under pressure; smart but doesn't over-process things); Fearless (against the rush; in the pocket; no hesitation; lets it rip); Tough (hangs in the pocket and takes hits); Demeanor (how he carries himself; leadership; likeable); Eyes (Keeps his eyes downfield; doesn't start watching the rush instead); Quick Release (Can get rid of the ball quickly/fast) & Passion and Determination. Matt Miller ✔@nfldraftscout #49ers and #Bills worked out Mitch Trubisky with Ryan Switzer. Kyle Shanahan was running the workout for the Niners. Also, we attended his Pro Day (QB Mitch Trubisky, North Carolina (March 21st) & per the Sacramento Bee, reviewed him closely at the NFL Scouting Combine (John Lynch). http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article143794204.html
*ER Jordan Willis - 6'4" 255 4.53. Top performer in the 40, Vertical Jump, 3-cone, 20-yard Shuffle drills and had a 1.54 10-yard split. Very productive college career as noted by PFF who had him second in the country with QB pressures. Rising player on many boards. He's a TFL machine, forces fumbles and continues to grow in the pass rush category. He's our Elephant. Growth every year: TFL = 1, 7, 14 & 17.5 and Sacks = 1, 4.5, 8.5 & 11.5. Some are now projecting he's a back-end first rounder but I think we get lucky here. MadDog has him as the #40.
QB Nathan Peterman - 6'2" 226 4.82. Peterman's experience in a pro-style passing attack gives him a head start headed into the league. His physical attributes are mostly average, but his accuracy, composure and anticipation are what sets him apart from some of the more physically gifted quarterbacks in this year's draft. His most apt comparison is, ironically, Kirk Cousins.
CB Brian Allen - 6'3" 215 4.48. Top performer with 6.64 in the 3-cone drill. Limited just 42.5 percent of targets his way to be completed over the last two seasons and terrific speed for his length. He's a H-W-S player with production but a bit raw and still learning how to tackle. But the idea of two starting 6'3" CB's has Saleh giddy.
*WILL Elijah Lee - 6'3" 230 4.70. Malcolm Smith won't be here forever and Lee has time to gain strength and experience and can grow under Smith for a year. The WILL in this defense is defined by Saleh as a "run and hit" position. This is perfect fit for Lee. I think he slips b/c of his size and needing a year in the weight room. MadDog has him at #118 but I think he slips to us at #143.
ZWR Josh Malone - 6'3" 210 4.40. Top performer in the 40. Kyle loves size and speed at the Z and he gets that in Malone. He got better every year and finished with 50 catches for 972 and 11 TD's.
*TE Jordan Leggett - 6'6" 236 4.71. Top performer in the 20 & 60-yard Shuffle drills. Massive catching radius and rises to the occasion, with big games against Florida State in 2015 and 2016 and another against Alabama in the National Championship. Saw his yards-per-touch increase to 17.1 in 2016. You know Kyle will know how to use this weapon.
*ER Keion Adams - 6'2" 245 4.70. Situational pass rusher mostly from the Elephant position playing the role of Frank Clark. Like with Lee, I feel his size at DE/Elephant will be a reason he drops to us here too. MadDog has him at #180 but I feel he'll drop to us at #198.
*WR/PR Artavis Scott - 5'10" 193 4.56. Scott will get a long look at kick off and punt return duties.
*RB Aaron Jones - 5'9" 208 4.56. Top performer in the Vertical & Broad Jump, 3-cone and 20 & 60-yard Shuffle drills. Jones exploded in 2016 after his red shirt year, ranking fourth in the FBS with 1,773 rushing yards and scoring 17 times (28-233, three TDs receiving). He should be a nice backup to Carlos Hyde and mixed in with DuJuan Harris and can play some ST.

*Player we met with/worked out/attended workouts.

Overall:
One thing every Head Coach needs is a Franchise QB and an Edge Rusher who can sack a FQB. And that's what Kyle got here with his first three picks. We ended up drafting 7 of the 10 players we were associated with.

Offense: Kyle Shanahan doesn't give a $^&* about "draft value" when it comes to QB (see RGII/Manziel in the 1st vs. Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2nd and Kirk Cousins in the 4th) and he's got plenty of time to groom his next FQB in Mitch Trubisky. He's the ultimate clean slate but with all the "traits" he's looking for. He'll red-shirt for two years, most likely, transitioning from the college spread to the pro-style WCO. Kyle takes his shot here at #2 knowing he'll most likely never be in the top 10 again. But he's not done yet! In the 3rd round, he grabs QB Nathan Peterman who's most often compared to Kirk Cousins. Why the overload? This is both a short and long-term plan to ensuring you get your FQB while also providing key depth and security and possibly, setting your team up with additional draft capital later (year 2+). Keep in mind that both QB's will take a couple years to develop with Peterman the most pro-ready today in case of an injury to Hoyer. If Cousins does come here next year, you now have Cousins - Trubisky - Peterman. Because Trubisky will be perceived to be highly/properly developed under Shanahan, in year 2, you may have the option to entertain trade-talks of Trubisky for huge draft capital, of which you'd then have a crap load of draft picks to improve your team while also having a Cousins - Hoyer - Peterman scenario. If we can not get Cousins, you still have a Hoyer - Trubisky - Peterman scenario with Trubisky pushing Hoyer in year 2 to start and he'd be completely ready to start in year 3 when Hoyer's contract expires (same exact path as Kirk Cousins). In addition, Peterman gives you a legit middle-round QB who too, could genuinely push Trubisky and potentially, even win the starting QB job. That's what you call a win - win - win scenario for your franchise around THE most important position in year 1 of the ShanaLynch era. Peace of mind.

Rumor: Eric Galko ✔@OptimumScouting. Before it's on S/N, listen to"What I've Heard"at @Bumpers#NFLDraft. Top QBs, 30+ prospects, every NFL team covered: https://bumpers.fm/e/b3qc1vasratg0121rq1g ; 6:27 AM - 17 Apr 2017
SF has high grade on Mitch Trubisky (and also really likes Kizer and Peterman but not in the 1st round)

Keeping with the offense, ShanaLynch add a ZWR in Josh Malone to help round out the receiving group allowing Garcon to move to the XWR spot with Kerley as the YWR plus other receiving weapons such as Marquise Goodwin, Aldrick Robinson, DuJuan Harris, Kyle Juszczyk & Vance McDonald. In addition, he added a massive-sized TE in Jordan Leggett, added some versatility in Artavis Scott who could also serve as our returner and Aaron Jones who too, can help on ST and add depth for both Hyde and Harris.

Defense: Finally, ShanaLynch turn their attention over to the defense which makes DC Robert Saleh a happy man. He adds ER Jordan Willis, WILL Elijah Lee, CB Brian Allen & situational ER Keion Adams. Willis will be a day 1 starter at the Elephant but Lee, Allen and Adams will have an opportunity to push-start and grow behind veterans over the next year+ and rotate with players at key positions. Allen has the best chance to start as does Adams as a situational pass rusher from both sides of the line.

UDFA Targets:
NT, S, OL, ER

6th, 7th & UDFA Targets:
LB/S Tyson Graham, South Dakota
CB Casey DeAndrade, New Hampshire
QB R.J. Nitti, Bucknell
C Bret Treadway, Lamar
OT Andrew Lauderdale, New Hampshire
RB Dalton Crossan, New Hampshire
RB Aaron Jones, Texas-El Paso
TE Derrick Griffin, Texas Southern
TE Johnny Mundt, Oregon
TE Phazahn Odom, Fordham
TE Mike Roberts, Toledo
WR Will Carter, Bucknell
WR Chad Hansen, Cal
WR Germone Hopper, Clemson
WR Artavis Scott, Clemson
WR Jalen Williams, Umass
WR/PR Mitchell Paige
PK Matt Davis

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we do get a trade-back to #12 with Cleveland (acquire #12, #33 & #108 plus two-2's in 2018):

First round: From Cleveland, 12 --- WR Mike Williams
Second round: From Cleveland, 33 --- RB Dalvin Cook
Second round: Own pick, 34 --- ER Jordan Willis
Third round: Own pick, 66 --- QB Nathan Peterman
Fourth round: From Cleveland, 108 --- G Nico Siragusa
Fourth round: Own pick, 109 --- CB Brian Allen
Fourth round: Compensatory, 143 --- WILL Elijah Lee
Fifth round: Own pick, 146 --- ZWR Josh Malone
Fifth round: From Washington, 161 --- TE Jordan Leggett
Sixth round: From Baltimore, 198 --- ER Keion Adams
Sixth round: From Denver, 202 --- WR/PR Artavis Scott
Seventh round: From Cleveland, 219 --- RB Aaron Jones

49ers trade 2nd pick and 109th pick to Jets for their 6th pick, 39th pick and 2018th 3rd round pick

49ers pick 6: DE Solomon Thomas (fixes our pass rush and run game)

49ers pick 34: QB Patrick Mahomes (insurance for next year, hope for this year/natural thrower)

49ers pick 39: WR Curtis Samuel (finally get a number 1 WR/first true non bust deep threat in years/similar to Christian McCaffery/explosive-accelaration chunk plays in various roles/instinctive /inside rusher or route running WR/rpl Ezekiel Elliott as OSU featured weapon 2016)

49ers pick 66: OT Roderick Johnson (Boasting a prototypical blend of size, quickness and experience in a pro-style offense, Johnson is among the few tackles in the 2017 draft class who warrants first round consideration./His surprising quickness also shows up in the running game, where Johnson is often asked to release off the line of scrimmage to block linebackers and defensive backs. Johnson climbs quickly to the second level and he can dominate smaller opponents with his natural girth and strength always need help at OT/opened holes for Dalvin Cook/1st round talent)

49ers pick 143: OLB Vince Biegel (Vince Biegel had himself a nice little day at combine. More I watch, the more I like. Tools are there, needs a plan and moves/is a football player who John Lynch would like/ versatile linebacker that teams can utilize in a number of ways.Vince Biegel is a smart football player who sees everything on the field. Able to quickly diagnose a play, and has the athleticism to get in place to stop it. A hard hitter who is noted for his motor and intensity. Biegel spent a lot of time in coverage and has excelled in that role. He is also valuable as a pass rusher, posting 99 pressures over a two year span/ Edge rusher we need or a OLB version of Solomon Thomas/played w TJ Watt

49ers pick 146: RB D'Onta Foreman (had one of better seasons at Texas last year ranked higher on Walter Football list/He is an imposing runner with his size and build and the type of ballcarrier that forces defenders to think for a split-second before attacking him. Foreman runs low to the ground with the forward momentum to carry defenders the final few yards, but his game is primarily predicated on power and toughness, lacking many open-field moves. While capable of being a workhorse in the NFL, Foreman is ideally suited for a backfield committee as a change-up ballcarrier to a scatback.Picks up speed as he goes - his fourth and fifth steps are faster than his first few. Vision to follow his blockers to the hole, showing the ability to string together sharp cuts/ needed backup to Carlos Hyde)

49ers pick 161: DT Jarron Jones (The 6-5, 315-pound Jones looked like the next big thing at Notre Dame until a torn MCL prior to the season ruined his 2015 campaign. Having already used his redshirt as a freshman, Jones gamely battled back, hoping to return in time to contribute. He sufficiently recovered enough to play a few snaps in the Fiesta Bowl loss only to suffer another injury - a stress fracture in his foot -- which limited his ability to practice this spring.Battling back from injury, unfortunately, has become the story with Jones, who missed the final two games of the 2014 season due to a Lisfranc injury. Before sustaining the Lisfranc injury against Louisville in 2014, Jones had recorded 40 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and two blocked kicks.Jones often lined up at defensive tackle for the Irish and certainly possesses the size and power to remain there at the next level. For a man of his size, Jones shows good initial quickness and flexibility to slip through gaps.

His best asset, however, is his power and length. Jones generates a powerful bull rush, showing impressive upper body strength as well as leg drive to push opponents into the backfield. Even when fending off blockers, Jones does a nice job of reaching out and lassoing ballcarriers, dragging them to the turf. Jones' long arms and good timing make him effective knocking down passes and kicks at the line of scrimmage./ needed depth along DT, hasn't reached potential due to injury

49ers pick 198: QB Joshua Dobbs (more insurance at QB/but he shows impressive understanding of the offense and where his receivers are, often resorting to second and third targets rather than relying on pre-snap reads. Has a calming presence in the huddle along with mental toughness.

When ready to throw, the ball comes out of Dobbs' hand like a rifle shot with a tight spin that makes it easy for pass-catchers to track. He's especially accurate on in-breaking routes like crossers and posts but also shows the ability to place the ball low and away from defenders on deep-outs, a required throw in every NFL offense.but his intangibles and physical traits will appeal to some NFL teams.

49ers pick 202: ILB Jordan Evans (finally draft an ILB for competition in TC)

@page { margin: 0.79in } p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120% } 49ers mock 2 (if Solomon Thomas taken)

49ers pick 6: SS Jamal Adams or FS Malik Hooker

49ers pick 34: QB Patrick Mahomes

49ers pick 39: OLB TJ Watt

49ers pick 66: WR Cooper Kupp

49ers pick 143: OT Julien Davenport (cousin of MK Gilchrist/ . Despite a lack of technique, his traits will have teams willing to draft and wait for him as a project. He will be a work in progress and might be forced to move to the right side/ Possesses elite arm length and hand size for the position. Can unravel his arms and stick them into the chest of a frustrated edge rusher. Able to gain necessary ground to race to the edge over first two kick slides. Keeps head back and out of pass sets when he punches. Team leader and two-year captain. Good strength in hands to snatch and secure the frame of defenders. Has adequate athleticism to reach and hook the edge. Able to get out in space as pulling tackle or on screens. Has moldable physical traits to work with.)

rest picks stay same
Nice job, NC. I think that's a very realistic and sensible draft. I would like to grab a RB where you left off.

Overall nice mock, realistic, and checks off several needs.

If Shanny picks a QB at 2, I'll cheer so loud and long that the neighbors might call the police on me. This means he sees a future FQB - something we've been desperate for for far too long.

Thanks! Absolutely...6th and 7th rounds are where Kyle finds his RB's.

No question...it means he's not a FQB yet but he's certainly one he feels he can develop into one in the near future.

The future starts now.

josh malone is one of those WR's i like in the mid rounds probably more than some of the guys in the 2nd. that is if we can get him end of 4th or top of the 5th
Nice Draft, I'm starting to lean Trubisky myself. If it wasn't for the Cousins rumors this would have been my pick all along.

The kid has a lot of upside, no question.

Still a chance it ends up being: Cousins, Hoyer, Trubisky

Trubisky climbs the ranks to #2 next year and in year 3, it's Joe Montana vs. Steve Young all over again.

still mitch??? so much better talent. Its not even funny how much more talent there is better than Michelle. And he doesn't even have the most upside.

And if you read exactly what kyle says he wants in a QB that mahomes, more then anyone. sorry but I cant fathom the idea of michelle at 2.

Such a horrible problem to have.

Yeah...come full circle. If you think Mahomes is the better fit, by all means. Would you take Mahomes at #2?

no I mocked just 5 minutes ago trading up to get mahomes at 26. I don't see any qb at 2 personally. I believe all the qbs can be decent or better, I just don't see a top ten talent at qb.

If Shanny sees either one of those guys as a FQB, then I'd say don't play games, don't get cute, just take the guy at 2 and mic drop.
