Phoenix 49ers 2018 Mock Draft v1.0-The Garopocalypse Edition

*For the purposes of this mock draft, I am assuming that the 49ers go out and address center in a major way in FA, bringing in someone like Travis Swanson, Ryan Jensen or Cory Linsley to handle the position. I expect CB and SAM LB to be addressed via FA as well. Expecting that the 49ers trade Joshua Garnett and cut ties with several other players such as Aaron Lynch.

Round 1-Roquan Smith-6'2", 225-ILB-Georgia

In a year with few elite prospects, Smith is quite tantalizing. Every bit the prospect that Reuben Foster was, better in coverage and without the injury issues, in this scheme he is a perfect fit as a weakside linebacker. Would be a starter from Day 1 and he and Foster would have the potential to be one of the scariest LB duo's in football. Smith comes with top notch instincts and many similarities to Bobby Wagner of the Seahawks. The 49ers defense would have two missiles constantly flying towards the ball and wreaking absolute havoc in the intermediate area of the field. Smith's abilities in coverage are what truly make him special. He can hold his own with RB's, TE's and slot receivers, very dependable player with superb natural football instincts.

Round 2(New Orleans Saints)-Braden Smith-6'5", 310-OG/OT-Auburn

To get Smith, the 49ers would likely have to move up in the 2nd. I am half expecting Garnett to get moved in a trade which would make this pick possible. Beyond Quinton Nelson he is my favorite guard in the draft and arguably a better fit for the blocking scheme. He's an experienced starter with the length and quick feet of a tackle but with the power to play inside. A technician with excellent footwork and a mean streak a mile wide, he'd be an instant starter on this OL at right guard and has the potential to be a Pro Bowl level player in the NFL. Also possesses the ability to play tackle in a pinch if needed.

Round 3-Marcus Davenport-6'6", 245-DE-University of Texas-San Antonio

Davenport is a smaller school defensive end with outstanding traits to be a high quality pass rusher at the NFL level. Explosiveness, outstanding length and a nonstop motor have helped him thrive at UTSA. He's still largely a project that needs to develop a greater array of pass rushing moves but the potential is tremendous and he could very well go higher than this point in the draft.

Round 3(Chicago Bears)-Wyatt Teller-6'5", 300-OG-Virginia Tech

I'm shocked that he's still flying under the radar so much for a guy who has played so excellently. Teller is a former defensive end/tackle turned guard who has consistently been improving throughout his time at Virginia Tech. Super athletic and mobile, he is the epitome of a zone blocking guard and should compete for a starting spot at left guard as a rookie. Just like Smith he plays with a mean streak and continues hitting defenders through the whistle, has particularly excelled as a pass blocker which would be welcome news for Jimmy G.

Round 4(Pittsburgh Steelers)-Jake Wieneke-6'3", 215-WR-South Dakota State

Wieneke is a very intriguing prospect. He's a big receiver with tremendous hands that has been incredibly productive throughout his college year. Terrific route runner that can be a nice red-zone target and possession receiver across the middle of the field.

Round 5(New York Jets)-Darren Carrington-6'1", 200-WR-Utah

Carrington had some major off the field issues which led to his dismissal from Oregon. He has rebounded with Utah and kept his nose clean. If everything checks out(potential issues with alcohol), he could be a steal later on in the draft. As a receiver he has many similarities to Will Fuller. A true vertical threat that simply beats defenses deep down the field consistently.

Round 6-Brandon Parker-6'7", 310-OT-North Carolina A&T

Small school tackle who has been the model of stability and has played at a high level every single year. MEAC OL of the year for 3 years straight. Good athleticism for his size, well regarded for his leadership and film study, he's an ideal developmental tackle to eventually take over at right or left tackle down the road.

Round 7-Ralph Webb-5'9", 195-RB-Vanderbilt

Ideal ZBS runner, has had an up and down season. Already owns pretty much every rushing record in Commodores history. He comes with decent size and quick burst, isn't going to blow up the Combine but could be a great fit for this scheme with his overall skillset. Has played RB and receiver, also can return kicks, good overall versatile weapon.

Round 7(Kansas City Chiefs)-Logan Woodside-6'0", 195-QB-Toledo.

I really like Woodside as a developmental QB prospect. He's not coming out of a pro style offense but the offense he runs does entail quite a few pro style concepts and puts a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. Woodside is way on the smaller side but has terrific accuracy and is tougher than a $2 dollar steak. I can see him going higher than this but if available here, he'd be great value if the 49ers were committed to holding on two 3 QB's next season. One of my favorite under the radar prospects. All he's done is produce. No real fantastic traits, just a smart, tough QB.
I hadn't considered Smith to be a guy we picked until recently. I've been a huge fan of his teammate Lorenzo Carter, and watching him I've noticed Smith more and more. I thought it was purely a luxury pick, but he would form the best LB duo in football woth Foster. I'd still prefer Nelson, but I'd be fine with this. I'd just hope they would move on from Smith (edit - Malcolm Smith) if this happened.

Braden Smith and Wyatt Teller are great picks, and Brandon Parker has been in my mock for a long time now (I have him as a 5th rounder currently). He could be a slimmed down Trent Brown.

Love Smith at the top.

If Garnett is not moved, where would you go with the 2nd pick?

I'm looking for wide out help. I like the sound of Weineke but can we wait that long to get upgrade the WR corp?

Nelson is an absolute stud of a guard, for this current scheme the 49ers are running, I think Smith could be nearly as good. He's also a pretty mean guy, a true enforcer but has super quick feet and the pass blocking instincts and movement ability of a tackle. For a ZBS, he's a pretty damn good fit overall, a highly experienced player who would come in and start immediately as a rookie.
With reports I've read about getting Garnett into Shanny style of heath u really think we trade him ???

Been checking out Teller since u made a thread about him would luv him on this team ...

Not sure I can get with picking a ILB at #2 or #3 we have alot wrapped up in Smith and used a 1st rounder on Foster ...

Tha rest looks not bad

Isn't there a special area for mock drafts Mr.Mod???

I'd like to go WR early with Ridley but Smith to me is too good of a prospect to pass up. When I think about him and Foster out on the field together, that is an absolute matchup nightmare for opposing offenses. Two guys with tremendous natural football instincts, Smith will rare coverage ability and awareness for a linebacker, that would be a hell of a matchup to defend.

My hope would be that between Garcon, Taylor, Wieneke, Carrington, Goodwin and Bourne that they could cobble together a pretty good quality wide receiver group. Nobody particularly dominant but a bunch of guys that could work well in this offense overall, a whole lot of speed on the outside with Carrington and Goodwin as well as toughness across the middle of the field with Garcon, Taylor and Wieneke, a couple of bigger targets to throw to in Carrington and Wieneke too.

Just a mod on a power trip, don't worry about it.

I can see your point with Smith but this team really needs a top weakside linebacker, I don't think Lynch has forgotten what a crucial role Derrick Brooks played in those dominant Tampa Bay defenses back in the day. Smith gives you a true All Pro caliber player who would be a boost to the entire defense in that he can more than hold his own in coverage and who has upper 1% level football instincts. He's similar to Borland in that he sees plays before they even develop but he has the next level athleticism on top of that. I fully expect him to be a human highlight reel in the NFL and if you pair him up with Froster, that would be very scary for the other guys.
Nice draft.
do you think they also address WR in FA as well,?
They will not draft another MLB with Malcolm Smith coming back and making good money. He's pencilled in to start.

I dunno. I think with Garcon, Taylor, Wieneke, Carrington, Goodwin and Bourne they could more than get by next season and then go all out at adding wide receivers in 2019.

If they didn't go with a 3rd QB, I'd look at Austin Proehl in the 7th round or UDFA. He's the son of former NFL WR and 49ers pain in the butt Ricky Proehl. All he did was make huge 3rd down catches for North Carolina last year playing with Mitch Trubisky. Both of the receivers ahead of him are now in the NFL and fairly productive. I think he could be a guy to really shock some people and make an NFL roster with grit and exceptional route running ability.

They can cut ties with Malcolm Smith fairly easy after next season.

He's not a long term player by any stretch of the imagination and if they were prepared to take Foster at #3, I could easily see them taking Smith that early, a guy who looks to have everything you want in a top end weakside linebacker in the NFL.
I feel like I just posted taking Smith and getting Teller in the third to you. Did I force your hand and have to drop your Mock?
Passing on Roquan Smith because of Malcolm Smith is like passing on Patrick Willis because of Derek Smith

Haha.

. I've been looking at Teller in the 3rd for awhile. Have been going back and forth between Nelson, Ridley and Smith in the 1st but for today's NFL and the level of talent needed on the defense, I think Smith grades out as the best overall option for this team if they can draft guys like Braden Smith and Teller to play guard later on in the draft. You're not going to find anyone close to the caliber of prospect that Smith is at LB later on though.
