Phoenix 49ers 2018 Mock Draft v1.0-The Garopocalypse Edition

This. You don't pass on a guy with All Pro level potential because you have an aging, so so player who has just spent the whole year on IR, I don't care what they paid him. He can spend some time as a starter until Roquan Smith inevitably passes him up and then you cut him after the season is over.

Comparing them in terms of prospects. Smith has absolutely elite instincts and tackling ability along with very good athletic ability. Barring injury or being put in some weird scheme that has him constantly taking on blockers, I can't see him being anything but a beast at the NFL level.
I likey. You didnt mention anything about Hyde and without taking one in the draft.. Im assuming youre re-signing him?

Id like to use your 4th and 5th round picks to trade up for the best WR available. Bourne and Bolden as the #5&6 could be solid IF we don't address WR in FA. I got a feeling Shanny is gonna make a push for Gabriel.

Garcon handling intermediate areas, Gabriel underneath with Taylor and Goodwin taking the top off. Me gusta

An off the ball LB with the #2 pick when the team already has Foster at Will seems like the team might be missing out on an impact player at another position. There aren't any good WR/CB prospects to be had at the top of this draft? Sorry I don't know much about college prospects.

I don't think you have to move up for WR's if you can get Wieneke and Carrington. I think both will go lower than their talent demands. I think both could thrive in this scheme. I see Wieneke as being similar to, a bigger but maybe a bit of a lesser receiver than Cooper Kupp of the Rams. Carrington I think could develop into a very good vertical threat ala a Will Fuller type if he keeps his nose clean.

The draft is pretty thin at the top. The best prospects out there are RB, OG, ILB and a couple QB's. There is no truly dominant edge rusher or prototypical Top 5 type WR.

I think Foster is playing Will as a result of injury and circumstance. If Malcolm Smith was healthy, Foster would definitely be playing Mike. What I expect long term would be Roquan Smith at WLB and Foster adding some more weight and playing in the middle. Those guys would be a twin terror and an eraser for other team's running games and intermediate passing.

Since you don't want much college football, I highly recommend checking out Smith.

Too many Smith in that sentence.
I'm not getting the impression Garnett would be a trade candidate...the team and he have invested quite a bit to transform his body. We'll see how that turns out, but I'd think a streamlined JG could be beastly and fit nicely into Shanahan's offense. Nothing not to like with Roquon Smith. I've heard notions of Willis-Bowman II and if that would happen it'd really solidify the LB corps for years. That said, I'd have to go with Bradley Chubb, who looks like the true pass rusher we don't have now. Don't know much about Braden Smith, but I do know he was part of an OL that went toe-to-toe w/'Bama and won. Definitely has the athleticism Shanahan wants. I'd take a WR at #3...Simmie Cobbs would be outstanding, but if he's not available, there are a number of good-sized WR's to choose from. Teller's definitely an intriguing prospect...another very athletic guy Shanahan would love. Between the FA acquisitions and this draft, I'd say pretty solid at this early date. I wonder if Lynch might sign a WR and a CB...two costly positions, but both ones he needs to acquire for Shanahan. I was thinking Devante Adams, Jarvis Landry kind of guys.
Probably best draft I've seen here so far, besides mine of course

People keep bringing up Chubb because he's the top DE but I dont think he fits the Elephant/Leo mold at all.

Dante Fowler. Vic Beasley. Chris Clemons/Bruce Irvin/Cliff Avril. Bradley Chubb. One of these is not like the others.

Not fast enough for LEO, too big for SAM.

I think he is far more of a Michael Bennett type, a strongside DE at the next level, something that the 49ers already have Solomon Thomas for. Having both of them on the same roster would be pretty redundant IMO which is while I think that he'll be a good pass rusher in the NFL, it will be for some other team. Plus I think Davenport fits that explosive edge rusher role a whole lot better than Chubb.

I'm sure he's a good looking prospect if you and Hero are gushing over him. I just feel top5 pick and with Foster on board, an off the ball LB that high seems "wasted" if there's a more impactful position to fill (Edge/CB/WR). But like you said, if it's thin at the top then BPA is BPA and if Roquan is smashing fools on Sundays no one will care where he was selected. I do understand the importance of those positions in this Cover3 defense (WLB/MLB). Need two LBs that cover lots of ground.
I'll definitely get into draftbreakdown film as the regular season comes to a close.

An alternative could be swap the positions drafted in the first two rounds. Leave Foster at WILL, take Q. Nelson in the 1st and MIKE Rashaan Evans in the 2nd.

With no truly elite edge rusher or wide receiver, no need for quarterback, I could get behind getting a guy like Smith who would be a 3 down player on defense. Having him and Froster patrolling out there would instantly improve the run and pass defense.

As good as Froster has been when healthy, I think Smith is an even better prospect, especially in coverage.
