Getting excited for the off season and wanted to throw a preliminary mock draft out there, I admit a few picks may be ranked higher later in the process but pre combine and bowl season its hard to know where guys will go.
Premise: Getting Jimmy G has opened up opportunity's for us to focus on the O-line and add to the much needed pass rush. I believe without getting these two foundations strong our rebuild will not get us to the superbowl. So Barkley, Ridley, DB's.... even though excellent prospects, we need to pass in the 1st IMO. In FA, I want to grab 2 key pieces, which we'll have to overpay, but stop there and save some cap for 2019. Allen Robinson would be nice but thats a bidding war I dont want to get into, Goodwin continues to improve.
FA:
Trumaine Johnson, CB- We already needed help at CB, and trading Robinson only makes this much more important. We will pay big bucks but Johnson will be our #1 immediately and also takes a very good player from a division foe.
Ryan Jensen, C- Getting an excellent Center will help our line and Jensen will add a nastiness to our interior. This is a must sign in the off season and will setup a successful start entering the draft and not need to reach for a Center and go BPA.
Resign:
Fusco OG 1-2 yr deal
Hyde RB 1-2 yr deal, incentive laden deal
Coyle, LB 2yr backup deal
Draft:
TRADE:
SF pick #3 traded to Clevland for #6 and #40
-Browns must go QB finally at #1 and grab Rosen or Darnold, but they struggled passing on Barkley, they use their 2nd from Houston to trade up and get who most consider to be the #1 prospect in Saquon Barkley.
1st f/ Browns- Harold Landry Edge, Boston College
-Excellent pass rusher with some coverage ability, we desperately need someone to rush from the outside to free up D'fo and get Thomas in his natural position, this also will help the DB's on the back end.
2nd f/browns- Braden Smith OG, Auburn
-Aggressive but athletic Guard that could step in and start from day 1. Garnett and Fusco battle for the opposite spot. With Jensen and Smith we get some nasty blue collar play in the middle. Huge for Jimmy and the running game!
2nd f/Saints- Anthony Miller WR, Memphis
-Wont test as elite, but is always open and makes plays, which Kyle will love. Could be our #1 or at worst take over for Garcon, who will be 32 at start of the season.
3rd own Armani Watts S, Texas AM
Watts can punish with brutal hits and play the ball for turnovers, with the injury history at the position we need to keep adding talent. This may be a bit low but our 3rd is basically a high 2nd.
3rd f/ bears Rashaad Penny RB, SD State
I think Kyle would love Penny for his offense and is an elite returner as a bonus.
4th f/steelers Alex Cappa OT, Humboldt State
Athletic small school OT that can sit and groom behind Staley.
5th f/jets Iman Marshall, CB USC
Flashes up and down, combine will be huge for where he goes.
6th own Adam Breneman TE, Umass
-Great blocking and pass catching TE, value pick. Combine could boost his stock if he tests well.
7th own Shaquem Griffin LB, UCF
-Very Athletic LB, but is missing his left hand, otherwise is a 2nd rounder. ST ace, possible starting LB if he can overcome his physical limitation. Really pulling for the kid, he clearly has the drive to be excellent.
7th f/chiefs Brian Allen C/OG, Michigan State
-developmental Center behind Jensen, can also play Guard.
Enjoy and go easy

Who do the browns draft with their #1 pick if it isn't a QB? Barkley?

Its in the trade, They take Rosen or Darnold if he declares. They simply cant pass on the #1 QB, but given all the picks they have from recent trades... they pair their rookie QB with one of the best RBs to come out in the past decade. The trade really is a win win and why it would happen, the Shanahan's know they can made mid round RB's look elite, and we get another 2nd and move back a bit and grab the Edge rusher we desperately need. An argument could be made for Roquan Smith at #6 too, but Landry ends the experiments and gets a true game changer on the edge.

I think we would get more than a 2nd for moving down 3 spots.
Look what they Bears gave up for moving up 1 spot.
#3 = 2200
#6 = 1600
#40 = 500
It's close but Cleveland would have to add their 4th. This is a great year to be looking to trade down.
BTW- nice mock. I'm not sold on Landry that high though. He had underperformed this year. 6 is a perfect spot for Roquan Smith.
Love the picks of Braden Smith and 40 seems like a good spot to take him. He is a plug and play RG and would compete with Fusco.
Watts is one of my favorites. Not sure he falls to the 3rd but he may. I could see him competing with Colbert.
Nice work.

So in the real world, if it plays out this way which is almost a guarantee if he we keep #3, I agree!!!! I think Lynch could get more, possibly another 2nd in 2019 Barkley is going to be a huge bargaining chip for a trade due to Elliot and Fournette bringing value back to an elite RB prospect!
Yeah I really wish that Landry showed more, but you can really see the fundamentals of a great pass rusher, the way he takes on big tackles, engages them, sheds and flips his hips on pursuit to the QB. If we grabbed Roquan Smith I would be equally excited, he would lock down the middle with Foster and could allow us to take more risks with blitz due to the speed we would have covering the middle from sideline to sideline!

Not really feeling the love for Fusco. Maybe as depth but think they can do better. I have watched him closely and he is still getting pushed around and not pass blocking esspecially well. I don't know dog its just alright.

Great draft but Fusco has to go
He whiffs on to many blocks for my liking

I disagree that we'd get more than that in a trade back. The trade value chart is a guideline and the #3 pick historically would have been used on a top QB, LT, WR, pass rusher, etc. (or a RB when RBs were valued more highly). The best players available at 3 may be a RB, an OG, and a LB (Roquan Smith, not a pass rusher) and there are a lot of similar players who could be available at 6. Getting an early 2nd round pick to trade back 3 picks would be a massive win and I'm not convinced the Browns would give that up for Barkley.

You solve the line problem you added a number one corner. We have Malcolm Smith Reuben Foster, and to add the pass rusher would be great. I am against drafting defense in the first round because we've done it a thousand times in a row. But because you've covered the line cornerback and at least we gained a playmaker at running back. I could get used to it.
I think Reid tarrt and Colbert can man the safety position. I don't think any 3rd rounder would beat them out. So I hope we resign Reid. He's also a locker room guy, on top of being a legit starter
