So you have us signing:
- Richburg. I really like him. One of the most athletic and best pass blocking centers in the league. He has injury concerns though.
- Norwell. Im concerned about because although he plays in a zone in Carolina it's an inside zone. The only difference is footwork but at 6'6, 325 in concerned he lacks the athletesism to get outside if he doesn't have a man to block in front of him which is the whole basis of an outside zone.
- Dion Lewis. I like him but I'm not sure he would be the back to replace Hyde. It seems Shanahan wants a back that is capable of being a 20 carry back if we need then a guy like Coleman comes in and spells him for 10 carries or so. Hyde isn't the answer. He isn't a fit. I think Breida and Lewis would play the same role here. Breida is 5'11, 190. I think Shanahan will be looking for a baxk in the 5'10, 210 range. Someone who is a dependable receiver, can get hit the hole on one cut depending on what the linemen is doing but someone who can break tackles as well. You have us drafting Pettway but Shanhan doesn't like to bring in specialists at RB. He wants 2 backs who can do it all. Breida and Joe Williams play the same role but we need a Devonta Freeman / Arian Foster type of back..
- I really like Malcolm Butler. He is a winner and I think that Lynch will want to bring players with that mentality here. He would lock down one side with Akhello on the other side.
- Jeremiah Attaochu would be nice to sign to compete with Harold at SAM.
I'm concerned with drafting Roquan. The reason we signed Malcolm Smith was he is familiar with the D. He would have been the QB. Coyle took over making the defensive calls. I'm not sure Foster will ever be the guy to line up the D. Coyle came in and settled down the D. If Roquan can be the QB of the D then great but I can't see us putting Malcolm Smith on the bench or cutting him relying on a rookie (Roquan) or Foster to make the defensive calls.
- I really like Davenport but I'm not sure he falls that far. He looks like top 15 pick. Clellin Ferrell seems like a perfect LEO for this scheme. Or Harold Landry if he drops.
- I like a receiver in round 3.
Nice work but I have concerns with the players and how they fit. Scheme fit is everything for this team. I'm not sure how Norwell or Roquan fit.

That's fair on Lewis. I think the Patriots will ultimately keep him, but he'd be a matchup nightmare here just as he is in New England. I don't know if he can stay healthy for a full season, so we probably would need another back besides him and Breida and the two of them are a little redundant. Norwell is a little like Nelson in terms of fit - I think he has enough athleticism to play in an outside zone, but it may not be the best fit. He'd still be a massive upgrade over what we have currently. I'm assuming Foster can play Mike and set up the defense, but I agree that Smith could make sense if we don't think Foster is ready. I just don't think Malcolm Smith is any good and thought we grossly overpaid for him in free agency.
I don't know which edge rusher will be available at the end of round 1, but I expect at least one of Key, Landry, Davenport, and Ferrell to fall a bit. Davenport and Ferrell would be fits as 3 down players while Key and Landry may be better off as pass rushing specialists as rookies. Key could fall due to character concerns or Davenport could fall if he struggles against tougher competition at the senior bowl. He's very raw compared to some of the other top pass rushers, but has impressive size and athleticism and plays hard.
RB and WR both seem to be sweet spots in round 3. The talent at both positions could cause a guy like St. Brown or Harris/Michel/Penny to fall.
Appreciate the feedback!

I'd love the trade up for Davenport if he were there. We have to get a Leo by an means. I'm not big on R Smith as I believe he's more of a Will. As is Foster. As is Malcolm Smith. If our coaches like Foster at Mike I think we can address another position in the top 10. Love handling the Oline in FA. Dig St Brown if he's there, I'd be shocked though. Overall I'd be happy. And your draft makes more sense based on The FA haul. We'd be ready to roll in 2018....

I love roquon but I think Rueben Foster is best suited at WLB. Not sure he will be able to hold up physically at MLB
Thanks! You may be right about Foster. He's a little bigger than Smith and I thought Foster did a good job taking on blockers at Alabama, but the NFL is another story. I really like the idea of the two of them flying around on defense, but our defensive line would have to keep them relatively clean.
If we're picking at 10, then chances are the Raiders will likely take Smith. They have a HUGE need at LB.

2 big FA signings (Norwell and Butler) and one middle of the pack signing (Richburg)? We have plenty of cap space for this since Norwell and Butler aren't going to break the bank like an elite pass rusher would (not that there's a chance Demarcus Lawrence hits free agency). I almost didn't include Malcolm Butler, but thought that was being too conservative in free agency with how much cap room we have.
At some point the SF 49ers are gonna use their cap space. With 100+ million and a clearer picture of what we have, Jimmy GQ made that time now. I expect them to spend about 50 million in outside free agents. Resigning our vets and maybe restructuring, extending some young players as well. That'll leave enough to franchise or sign jimmy longterm. It'll also leave enough rollover to resign our young stars going forward. Buckner will get paid. The contracts signed now will typically faze out by the time the current draft class's deals expire. Spend. Playoffs. Excited

I was very vocal about how absolutely terrible Baalke was as a GM. But he left us in great shape cap wise for a speedy rebuild. Finding a QB, shifted gears.

Foster is a MIKE. Re-sign Coyle to back him up.
Malcolm Smith and Roquan Smith are WILL. Malcolm makes the calls on D if Foster isn't ready.
Eli Harold and Jeremiah Attaochu at SAM
So can we say that our greatest LB weakness is at SAM? Can someone list the best SAM prospects in the draft and free agency?

I wouldn't say Harold is a weak spot.
He actually was quite solid. He didn't put up splashy numbers but he did his job and helped us turn around a historically bad run D.
We have bigger holes to fill on D than replacing Harold.
The SAM in this scheme basically needs to set the edge and keep the RB inside. They will never have splashy base #'s but a guy like Irvin for Seattle offered pass rush in the nickle D. We don't do that here because we brought in Dumervil and Marsh in on passing downs. Not the SAM backer.
On base D we basically play with 5 down linemen with the SAM backer a yard off the LOS. He needs to have the size and strength to set the edge but the ability to drop back if needed to cover his zone.
That said I think Ohio State's Tyquan Lewis would make a fantastic SAM backer.

This is true. We still had some terrible contracts on the books but he definitely didn't leave us cap poor. But was that more Parag or Trent?
