Bimbo Mock

This is a pretty exciting offseason for our niners, as we are positioned to make a pretty big jump. For starters, let's look at our team needs, in order of priority (in my opinion).

TEAM NEEDS

  1. Edge Rushers (both LEO & SAM) – This is the main thing holding our D back from excellence. If we can get some guys in to fill the Vic Beasley / Cliff Avril role, that will be huge. We were 6th worst in the league in terms of sacks, but if we can get a few guys to threaten the edges then we should see sacks pick up across the board.
  2. Center – This was one of our main team weaknesses this year, and is a hugely important position in Shanahan's scheme. This has to be addressed.
  3. OG/OT – Fusco and Tomlinson proved to be middle of the pack, and while I'm ok with them as placeholders, we need to bring in high-upside competition. Ideally, we find someone who can also swing out to tackle in an emergency. Having Beadles out there these last few games has not been amusing.
  4. #1 WR – Garappolo has got our offense humming, but a true #1 WR is needed to elevate us to a top 5 offense in the league. This is the guy who bails you out when a defense covers things up perfectly, and can help convert in the red zone when windows are tighter.
  5. CB – We need someone with size opposite of Witherspoon, and CB is a key role in this scheme.
  6. RB – While I'm opened to keeping Hyde at a reduced rate, It's probably unlikely. At his age, this is probably his last chance for a good contract, and he probably wants guaranteed years.
  7. WILL/MIKE Depth – I'm good with Foster / Smith as starters, but we need depth behind them.

ROSTER MOVES
  • Resign Jimmy G @ 5 Years / 130 Million
  • Let Hyde walk
  • Re-structure Ward and move him to CB, backing up S
  • Re-sign Reid after letting him test a soft market. Starts at SS, and backs up WILL.

FREE AGENCY
Looking at our team needs, there are three "premium positions" where we have holes (#1 WR, LEO, CB). These are positions where you often need to invest a 1st round pick to find a true difference maker. Looking at the free agent class, there isn't much available in terms of edge players, but there are some good options at WR & CB, allowing us to plug two premium holes before we get to the draft. Shanahan likes experienced centers, so I also think we prioritize that before getting to the draft.

  • CB Trumaine Johnson (4 years / 53 Million) – Big corner and good scheme fit. Signing him away from a rival helps as well.
  • WR Allen Robinson (1 year / 15 Million) – I anticipate the Jags going big on a QB, not leaving money to franchise ARob. Don't think he'd get true #1 money off the injury so that he'll look for a prove it deal somewhere (ala Jeffrey/Pryor). With the Jimmy/Kyle combo, we're as good an opportunity
  • C Matt Paradis (3 years / 27 Million) – Smart experienced center who we should have a line on via the Peters connection. Was a top rated C in the game in 2016.

DRAFT
With a strong FA class, we are looking for edge rushers, a running back, guard, and depth at linebacker. Good news is that OG/RB are two deep positions in this years draft class, and I also feel like there are some strong SAM prospects through the first few rounds.

1.9 – Harold Landry (LEO): I love this guys burst, bend, and relentlessness. I was hesitant going his way with a top 5 pick, but I feel like #9/10 will be the perfect position for him, and he can fill the Vic Beasley role in our defense.
2.56 (Saints) – Braden Smith (OG/OT): Workout warriors with production to match this year. He's got good athleticism for the scheme, and offers the added flexibility to kick out to tackle in a pinch if needed.
3.70 (Bears) – Rashad Penny (RB): Great fit for the zone scheme, and can compete with Joe Williams to be the lead back.
3.74 – Jeff Holland (SAM): Love his hands and pass rushing prowess. Hoping he declares, but Nwosu from USC is another candidate here if not.
4.126 (Steelers) – Sony Michel (RB): We double down at RB here, with a guy who was PFF's 2nd rated zone runner in CFB.
5.134 (Jets) – Dorian O'Daniel (WILL): Speedy athletic guy who can be groomed behind Malcom Smith at the WILL position, and a contributer on special teams from day 1.
6.170 – Richie James (Slot WR): Some competition for Taylor here with another shifty WR with great hands, and a lot of production at the college level.
7.201 – Brian Allen (C/OG): Think he falls in draft ala Magnusun. Gives us a practice squad guy to groom behind Paradis.
7.218 (Chiefs) – Christian Campbell (CB): CB with size to groom behind Witherspoon/Johnson

OFFENSE
QB – Garoppolo / Beathard
HB – Penny / Williams / Breida / Michel
FB – Juszczyk
Outside WR – Allen Robinson / Garcon / Goodwin / Aldrick Robinson
Slot – Taylor / James
TE – Kittle / Celek / Paulsen
LT – Staley
LG – Smith / Tomlinson
C – Paradis / Allen
RG – Garnett / Fusco
RT – Brown / Gilliam

DEFENSE
LEO – Landry / Marsh
3 Tech – Buckner / Day
Nose – Mitchell / Jones
Big End – Thomas / Armstead
SAM – Holland / Harold
MIKE – Froster / Coyle
WILL – Smith / O'Daniel
Outside CB – T Johnson / Witherspoon / Campbell

I would be yelling at the top of my lungs if something like this could happen!

Braden Smith and Sony Michel may not be there, but both were be perfect for us. Penny is another great RB for our scheme, Landry and Holland would give us much needed youth behind Dumervil and our team with Johnson at CB and Allen at #1 WR would put us over the edge and play off bound.

Love the FA and mock, well done!
Love the FA. Would love to get Landry, Holland & Michel in the draft
Nailed it.
Very very nice! 👍

I like everything. Except lol. I'm not sold on penny and brieda at all. I'd rather keep Hyde. And Bourne is better than Robinson imo. But like it overall.. especially grabbing a cab in free agency instead of the draft. Spoon can be a solid corner with an example and coaching

I'm also split on Hyde. If we can agree to a reasonable short term deal, then I'm opened to bringing him back, although I'd still draft a RB or two.

Regarding Bourne, are you talking about Aldrick? If so, I don't necessarily disagree and he might beat home for a spot. At first I thought you meant Bourne was better than Allen Robinson
Very solid offseason!

Yes talking aldrick
Paradis is a RFA
I would love that off season.
I think you have Michel and O'Daniel too low. Both are 2nd rounders IMO
OMG...
