Personnel Moves -

Resign: Garoppolo, Coyle, Marsh, Fusco

Release: Beadles

Extend: Tartt, Brown, Pinion, Ward (+2 years, reduce 2018 salary)

Analysis: Not much to justify here. Reid, Kilgore, and Hyde look for the green and entrenched starting positions in FA.

Free Agency Additions -

Tier 1: T. Johnson (CB, LAR); Z. Ansah (DE, DET)

Tier 2: B. Garland (C/G, ATL); T. Murphy (DE, WAS); J. Bademosi (CB, NE); J. Matthews (WR, BUF)

Analysis: Johnson and Ansah address critical needs with ideal scheme fits. Garland competes for a starting spot. Murphy is a 1 year, prove it guy. Bademosi has direct ties with Hafley - our DBs coach - growing as a defender and displays strong ST skills. Matthews can play slot or outside.

NFL Draft -

CLE - Darnold; NYG - Rosen; IND - Chubb; CLE - Barkley; NYJ - Allen (trade w. DEN; Elway signs Cousins)

DEN - Nelson; TB - Fitzpatrick; CHI - J. Jackson; OAK - R. Smith

49ers trade #10 for Bills #21, 2nd, and 3rd (via PHI) round picks. Bills trade up to select Baker Mayfield, leapfrogging QB needy teams including possibly the Miami Dolphins. Bills can trade #22 to move back and regain lost picks. With Chubb, Barkley, and Smith off the board, we trade back.

R1: Billy Price - C - Ohio St. (via BUF) | Guess what other center was selected #21 overall? Alex Mack. Shanahan gets his new anchor in the middle.

R2: Tyrell Crosby - T/G - Oregon (via BUF) | Yes...back to back picks. Crosby starts at left guard, but could replace Staley at LT in the future.

R2: Rashaad Penny - RB - SDSU (via NO) | It's only ironic we select a RB with this pick. Bell cow back that adds a new dimension to the unit.

R3: Quenton Meeks - CB - Stanford (via CHI) | He's the prototype corner in our scheme. Studious type that desires to get better every day.

R3: Justin Lawler - DE - SMU | He's a mid-round draft crush for me. Strong against the run, but agile enough to be a big end or LEO on sub-packages.

R3: Siran Neal - DB - Jacksonville St. (via BUF thru PHI) | Similar to Colbert, Neal can flex between CB and S. Could replace Ward at FS.

TRADE: Lions trade 4th round pick for 49ers Joshua Garnett and 7th (via KC) round pick.

R4: Micah Kizer - LB - Virginia Tech (via DET)| Kizer is another one of my mid-round crushes. Not a 3 down LB, but I think he's a 2 down SAM/MIKE.

R4: Chris Herndon - TE - Miami (via PIT) | He's got potential to thrive as a role playing move TE and value on ST.

TRADE: 5th (via NYJ) and 7th for Vikings 4th round pick.

R4: Jaylen Samuels - OW - NC St. (via MIN) | Primarily works at WR, but he could a Taylor Gabriel threat in Shanahan's system.

R6: Brett Toth - OT - Army | Developmental prospect that projects best in a zone scheme.

This would be epic you hit on all the needs. You also added Neal who is my later round draft crush. If I could make one change I would swap Penny for Michel as I think he will be a better pro.
Don't really like the first two picks at all. Shanny's history suggests he will go after o line FA hard. Taking two rookie lineman with their first two picks just doesn't seem like something that the niners would do.

In any case, Daniels the C out of Iowa and frank Ragnow would prob be better picks than Billy Price. All in all not bad. I just don't like putting trades into mocks bc it's just a crapshoot.
I'm really high on Toth after the senior bowl, but it's worth noting he likely goes undrafted as he has a 2 year commitment to the military before he can play in the NFL. Maybe a team throws a 7 for him, but I gotta think we need players who can compete for time now.
Great write up...a lot of FA (like your top two) not a fan of Matthews dude is a pure slot WR.

Hate your first two picks. Crosby isn't a 2nd rd talent imo.

Really nice job GEEK!! I love what you did and where you addressed needs. My one little bit of worry would be on our interior of the o-line.

Starting two rookies and Fusco. I am a big Price fan so I think ultimately it will work but early in the season it might be pretty darn rough. But the goal is to build long term so really nice job!

Definitely gave me ideas and things to think about for my mock.

Yea that o line looks shaky. Nice free agents. Much rather add a top flight vet o lineman. Use one of those 1st two picks in BPA. Don't really like extending Ward.
no on Crosby in the 2nd

REALLY good stuff. Very in-depth and realistic as well. Not real crazy about your mock draft but it wouldn't be terrible either.

i really like it! i would just hope we upgrade the LB core a little more. It is a pretty big homerun offseason though. But if foster goes down, we are in big trouble. Would like to pick up a true MLB instead of Lawler or Neal
I like the idea of Bodemosi but don't like T. Johnson and your first two picks. If we did that trade we would be in position to take much better players IMO.

To play devil's advocate here, we spent a lot of time in a 4-2-5 scheme. Dumervil-Buckner-Thomas-Ansash as the primary set at DL. Foster is a lock for one of the LB spots as part of the "2" in the 4-2-5 scheme. But that second spot could be occupied by Smith (primary), Coyle, Kizer, Tartt, or potentially Neal. Imagine this:

DE: Dumervil
DT: Buckner
DT: Thomas
DT: Ansah

LB: Foster
LB: Tartt

DB: Witherspoon
DB: Williams
FS: Ward
SS: Colbert
DB: Johnson
I don't think Crosby can play guard and I definitely don't see it in Shanahan's system. I do think he will be a good tackle so I would see him being the swing tackle if drafted in the second and future Staley replacement.

DOD will occasionally let those guys do hometown recruiting to fulfill their commitment. It makes more sense for the military to lose one troop, if that troop gets a big enough name to bring in hundreds more.
