DTG--Mock #1

FREE AGENTS NEEDED (no particular order)
C (a younger replacement or backup for Kilgore--Jensen)
OG (could be Tomlinson or Fusco but...an upgrade would be great!)

CB (T Johnson would be great but...he will have his pick)
Edge (Aldon Smith...OK, kidding...but someone like him--a difference maker. No idea who they can attract!)

DRAFT
#9 Rd. 1 WR Courtland Sutton, SMU, 6'4" 215 (tall receiver, good production)
#59 Rd.2 OC/OG James Daniels, Iowa, 6'4" 295 (backup to Jensen/Kilgore)
#70 Rd.3 OLB Malik Jefferson, Texas, 6'3" 240 (solid all around LB, good speed and quickness)
#74 Rd.3 CB Quenton Meeks, Stanford, 6'2" 204 (competition big DB--upgrade to Johnson?)
#124 Rd 4 ILB Christian Sam, Arizona St., 6'1" 241 (Plugger/ST, quick and decisive)
#134 Rd 5 RB Rashad Penny, SD St., 5'11" 220 (big, quick work horse, limited break-away-speed)
#170 Rd 6 FS Godwin Igwebulke, Northwestern, 6'0 205 (ST and camp competition)

You forgot Jeremy McNichols
Would go crazy if Jefferson fell to the the niners 3rd round pick..
I like your first 5 picks a lot. I don't know that Jefferson makes it past the 2nd and Penny could go in rounds 2-3. Christian Sam could be available in the 5th tho. Otherwise we are drafting 3 guys that play Will and/or Mike? Overkill as we have 2 capable starters. Jefferson to me fixes our need there by himself. C Sam is more Mike. But Jefferson could play either. If keeping Hyde, doubt we draft Penny. If we draft Daniels and sign Jensen which wasn't clear in your post, Daniels would start at Gaurd and be the Center if the future, IMO. I like that move a lot.

Left quite a few out but at this point backups are going to get much more competition. Lot of cap space and many picks.

I used the CBS big board, but have seen him higher and lower. There are some really crazy placements on the CBS board--WR St. Brown in the sixth or seventh? But until we get closer to the draft it will be topsy turvy!

Thanks, they need to find at least two elite LBs to use in this 4/3. Foster might be one but he has an injury history, hits like a short term LB and has a drug bust (though grass isn't the end of the world it wasn't the brightest decision for a player). 3rd, 4th and 7th rounders to compete for three spots as backups. Never overkill when you desperately need to find special players. Sam is a plugger and run stopper who might only play on early downs or goal line. DeLuca is a shot in the dark who might help special teams. I don't break players down by position, particularly 4/3 LBing spots. Great players can play across the board as LBs and being fast and strong with good instincts--what's not to like!?

Daniels could back up Jensen and an OG spot while he waits for his chance to start. With the way the 9er line looked last year there is plenty of room for improvement.

Penny is a tough running big back who does not have top speed. He is not a Hyde replacement so if they do not resign Hyde they may need to draft a RB higher.

Backup LB's are easy to find cheap. Penny is better then you think. Overall nice job

Starting QBs are really easy to find as well...and cheap. Finding good QBs on the other hand...

Seriously, I want LBs who can start within a year or two or make an impact on STs.

My point is we have at least 4 position groups that need more attention and drafted 3 LB's. That's all. LB's that can start in a year or 2 are great to have also
Just can't see kyle wanting Courtland Sutton...not a very good route-runner and his hands aren't that great.
Sutton is a fringe first rounder let alone top 10 pick

Having great LBs is a must to get the D up to speed. There aren't many top end DBs in the draft and I'd prefer they try to grab a FA...though they need some luck in that regard. Seems that the players may be doing a good job of recruitment this year.

Sutton offers qualities the niners lack and he has been productive. On top of that he will likely be there at #9 as opposed to the list I made of elite players who will be gone! Shanahan may see a guy who can be coached better, but who knows? Just guessing at everything until draft day.

Every time I see a new mock post, I immediately go straight to your direct feedback. Love it!

Always enlightening, he is! Sutton is my tenth favorite player so far watching college games this year--draft eligible guys. The others will be gone or are not a high priority. But as many mentioned, FAs are the best way to fill immediate needs. I believe Sutton will develop while Garcon and Goodwin (and I hope a top FA) benefit from JG's precise passing.
