2018 NCommand's Mock Draft

Fun to look at the breakdown. Do they visit more guys because more guys are available in a position? Or do they visit because of need? Or both? Since they have their FQB I would think pass rush is the last major step to create a competitive team. All the other positions could be improved but are at least adequate.

No, no duplicates. I list ER, DE and DT separately. Not every player fits perfectly in each bucket but it's not too hard to see how we'd use each of these specialties.

The answer to the second question is --- yes. LOL.

Typically a team meets with players that match their needs and when you look at this list, it certainly matches up perfectly in this case. ER in particular, is incredibly telling --- all 7 players expected to go no later than the 2nd round. That would tip off to fans like us that that is a very important position and they are doing their homework. Other visits are tied to the FO wanting to meet them, get to know them more, specific drills, and other research. A FO can also use a visit to make other organizations THINK we're interested in a player for a trade possibility (Trubisky/Bears - Kyle personally "worked him out").

What I've found over the years is that we typically end up drafting between 50-67% of the players we met with so this list is pretty important to compile each year. And honestly, it might be closer to 67% b/c there are visits we never hear about or not until well after the fact. But it's a great tool.

PS: QB being last on this list and ER being first is very telling going forward.

Phillips, agreed. Both Thomas and Armstead at now for Big End...perhaps if they get a bigger DE again, that's a sign they don't plan on optioning Armstead's 5th year option and this move is for rotation and depth there plus interior rush.

Also agreed on Miller. He's a Kyle type of receiver and considered by many to be the best in the class but not the big bodied WR we also seem to be looking at.

Agreed on all your other points too.

I've got a more updated detailed list now based on visits and quality with each so I might do another mock following the exact same formula for fun.

It would be crazy if the Brown's take Landry over Chubb. I don't mind the 49ers drafting another DT for depth purposes. Armstead hasn't really produced. I really think the 3tech DT is key to the LEO pass rusher being productive. So more competition at DT for Solomon, Armstead and Buckner is always welcome. Miller has good speed, and I think if Kyle can find a faster WR - even in the red zone, speed can scare defenses. We'll see if his production will but stepped up as he goes into the NFL.

Very telling = obvious?

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I agree on both accounts.

I took a look at ross Dwelley, Ben Johnson and Auden Tate, these are all tweener players that Kyle seems to like. They all can catch the ball, they are all big guys, and they all need work on strength and being able to block. They don't have the deep speed, but they do seem to have the jump ball verticals that you need in the red zone ally'oop passes.

I can see Auden Tate be a quasi-TE/WR, and I can see Ben Johnson be another tweener FB/TE/Wr. I can see them taking Ross Dwelley in undrafted free agency.
Deontay Burnett is a slot receiver/undersized outside WR, not a 6'5 red zone threat...

He's 5'11 5/8". The combine page lists the wrong height but it's obvious from the description and his weight (186) that he's not 6'5.

Not a fan of Landry at 9 but I like the rest of the picks.

I totally missed that. I'll certainly look to swap him out and when all the visits are in, possibly redo it totally. Thanks for that heads up!
The final tally is basically in so here's one more draft based solely on the pre-draft visit/connections formula (93 players) and going right down the line: ER, WR, LB, CB, T, DE, S, RB, G, C

2018 NCommand / Pre-Draft Visits:
(1 | 9) - Harold Landry, ER / 6-3 252
(2 | 59) - Michael Gallup, WR / 6-1 205
(3 | 70) - Fred Warner, LB / 6-3 227
(3 | 74) - Siran Neal, CB / 6-0 199
(4 | 128) - Alex Cappa, T / 6-7 305
(5 | 143) - Bilal Nicholas, DE / 6-4 306
(6 | 184) - Trayvon Henderson, S / 6-0 200
(7 | 223) - D'Ernest Johnson, RB / 5-10 208
(7 | 240) - Skyler Phillips, G/C / 6-3 324

After GoldenJoe did a nice synopsis via The Athletic on Shanahan draft patterns, here is a draft in Kyle's favor:

NCommand/ShanaLynch 2018 Mock Draft:
1st round | 9th overall - ER Harold Landry
2nd round | 59th overall - MIKE Uchenna Nwosu
3rd round | 70th overall - G Austin Corbett
3rd round | 74th overall - RB Rashaad Penny
4th round | 128th overall - WR Marcell Ateman
5th round | 143rd overall - G/C Mason Cole

I'd be stoked with this one.

Everything incredibly well done NC, and. Great insight plus so much to think about. I like this list with just two little changes:

#9. ER Landry
#59. MIKE Uchenna Nwosu
# 70 OG. Corbett
#74 SAM Ogbonnia Oronokwo
#128 LB/S Dorian O'Daniel
#143. G/C Mason Cole

All i did was remove your RB and WR who i don't believe will go in first 6 picks and replaced them with the OBO (SAM) and Dorian ODaniel (LB/S). .True this leaves us short one CB but that would be my next pick. Also got two OGs (one an OG/C) in the first 6 picks because i don't believe we have 2 starters at OG now. Maybe one in GArnett, and with two others we then have a backup for OG when(not if) one goes down . Rather than have someone else to hand off to, or someone else to throw to, i finished out the LBs, OGs to protect our Franchise, and of course, ER. WR and RB can come later.

Just those 2 changes make me happy, but great effort on the overall picture. Congrats. Can't imagine the work that went into this. Many thanks.

Oh in case we trade back with Landry at #18, i really like that one....only problem is he is long gone by #18. Saw him picked over CHubb at #4 also. Wow.

My man...I've updated my final version in the Original Post too; the one I'm going with. Videos and rationale included. Let me know what you think.
