Assumptions:
- We are still rebuilding. It's about players, not just one player.
- EDGE, LB, CB, WR, and OL are positions of greatest need due to lack of talent and/or depth.
- We will be active on draft day, and look to recoup our lost 2nd round pick from the Garoppolo trade.
Free Agency Signings:
Eric Reid - S/LB; Willie Snead - WR
NFL Draft:
1. BUF trades up for a QB with CLE being the trade partner.
2. After the trade down, CLE trades up with SF to leapfrog the Raiders in getting Ward - CB. We trade down and swap 2nds. We give up our 4th via PIT.
3. LAC worked out Jackson and need to find a Rivers's successor, they trade up with SF to leapfrog the Cards. We get their 3rd and 4th.
CLE - Darnold | They get their franchise QB.
NYG - Rosen | QB to succeed Manning.
NYJ - Allen | Allen is the pick - taller, better arm, higher ceiling.
BUF - Mayfield (BUF trades #12, #22 for CLE's #4) | The last tangible QB that could start day 1. Trade up to leapfrog DEN.
DEN - Chubb | They look to trade down with no QB left, but Chubb is a nice prize here.
IND - Nelson | The best OL prospect in ages. Don't pass on blue chip players.
TBB - Barkley | This is a steal right here. The QB run allows Barkley to fall right in TB's laps.
CHI - Edwards | Potential to play OLB or ILB in Fangio's scheme.
CLE - Ward | SF doesn't want CB here, and CLE is a willing trade partner to get the #1 CB in the draft.
OAK - Fitzpatrick | Needs at either CB or S, Fitz can line up where they really need him.
MIA - Payne | Compares most to Suh, and now they get his replacement.
LAC - L. Jackson (LAC trades #17, #84, #119 for SF's #12) | LAC gets their successor to Rivers, SF continues to acquire more draft picks.
WAS - Vea | Vea + Tomsula is a 3-4 one gap match made in heaven.
GBP - Davenport | Raw but better size for Pettine's scheme. Toss up between him and Landry here.
ARI - Ridley | Needs all over the place, but Ridley + Fitz provides some weapons for Bradford or Glennon. Will trade to trade down.
BAL - Daniels | Jensen's departure means they have a glaring hole at center. Scheme fit here.
---
49ers Draft:
R1: Harold Landry - DE/LB - Boston College (via LAC) | With GB thinking Davenport is a better fit, we secure Landry at 17. We all know the talking points here. Toss up between Landry and R. Smith. You could argue either pick here.
R2: Isaiah Oliver - CB - Colorado (via CLE thru HOU) | Run on QBs and interior OL results in Oliver being available here. Thank goodness for the trade with CLE to get him. If Oliver thrives, Sherman may be one and done in SF.
R3: Equanimeous St. Brown - WR - Notre Dame (via CHI) | Has the trio of height, weight, and agility to become a weapon in Shanahan's scheme. Gets separation on the outside, physical enough for the slot, and tall enough to be a red zone threat.
R3: Jerome Baker - LB - Ohio State | A pure WILL prospect with coverage and sideline to sideline speed, Baker is a poor's version of R. Smith in the first round. However, Malcolm Smith and Jerome Baker in a pass sub-package will provide some great zone coverages in the middle of the field.
49ers trade 3rd (via LAC) and 7th (via MIA) for Broncos 3rd (comp, #96) and 4th (#106) round draft picks. Broncos trade up to select Mike White - QB.
R3: Chris Herndon - TE - Miami (via DEN - comp) | A move TE that offers OW potential. Imagine a heavy set with McKinnon, Juice, Kittle, Herndon, Garcon, and Goodwin - does the D go heavy or dime? Either way, Shanahan and Garoppolo will rip the s**t out of the D in this big formation.
R4: Josey Jewell - LB - Iowa (via DEN) | Not the most athletic, but a highly productive player that can sniff out the ball carrier. He could be our new Chris Borland - surprised by his on-field contributions due to size and speed limitations.
R4: Bo Scarbrough - RB - Alabama (via LAC) | Big strong running back with upside as a powerful and fast-enough back coming from a pro style system. With his height, he could also become a nice threat in the passing game in two back sets - Bo and Mckinnon.
R5: Brett Toth - T/G - Army (via NYJ) | ZBS with athletic upside that will compete with Tomlinson at LG, but also provide value as a developmental LT in the future with Staley's age.
R6: Stephen Roberts - S - Auburn | Raw but a nice developmental prospect as a single high free safety. With Ward moving to CB, it creates an opening to continue to add depth to our safety position.
R7: David Wells - TE - SDSU (via KC) | Blocking specialist but offers upside with his height as a short down passing target.

I like a lot of the players you selected here and I also hope we can bring back Reid on a 1 year deal.
A lot of trades you made here. Wouldn't be upset at all of it worked out this way. Always look forward to the work you put in to these man.

Thanks man. We are still in rebuild more even with JG at the helm as QB. 2019 is where we will get aggressive in FA.

Not sure if you know, but Toth has a 2 year commitment to the army, and won't be available right away. It's a bummer, as I think hed be an excellent addition, but not for a 5th round pick with that large of an asterisks next to his name.

It's been mentioned before but people have gotten passes on that 2 year commitment before.

That's what you put near the top and yet, in your draft, you double up at the TE position and draft an OT who has a two year military commitment to fulfill first.
First three picks and your LB picks are solid. Think you could go interior OL earlier and then draft a developmental OT late who will actually be playing next year.

I believe this year, the army changed the rule, and the exemption is no longer allowed.

I would like to see O line addressed sooner. I'd pick the best of Ragnow, Braden Smith, best available instead of the tight end. Love the rest.

That's fair and I did think of that before making the rest of the picks. However, it seems like this staff has high confidence in Staley-Tomlinson-Cooper-Brown as our starting 5. Garnett is basically that early round pick, but just went through a "redshirt" year.
As much as I personally would want to pick OL sooner, we may just punt on trying to find succession 1-2 years out vs. address core team voids and provide Garoppolo with weapons.

The army didn't change the rule; the president did. Releasing professional athletes from their 2 year commitment was an Obama policy to aid in recruitment. The athletes can go to their new town and play, but they have to work in a recruiting office in their downtime. Who doesn't want to sign their contract with a player on their favorite team.
Not sure why the policy was reversed. It seemed like a smart exchange: you give up the rights to one troop, but they attract dozens/hundreds more.

Why would we trade AA for a conditional pick? This generally means a low pick. Rookie salary, on a prove-it year, I see no point in this.
