How our 53 looks for next season. Positional analysis

Quarterback (2)
Jimmy Garrapolo- Franchise QB, should improve incrementally in second full season. Ceiling Pro Bowl, floor top15 QB.

Nick Mullins- solid young cheap backup that can easily go .500 with this roster

C.J. Beathard- personally I doubt we keep three QB's next year, barring injury

Running Back (4/5)

Raheem Mostert- he might not start, which bugs me, but he's the first I'll mention. Stud! Under-rated, underused. Let's hope he gets 250 carries next season

Kyle Juszczyk- pro bowl fullback in last year of contract. Extending could lower his cap number. 2-3 more years, saving in 2020

Tevin Coleman- he's under contract for 4.9 million and we'd lose nothing cutting him. Lots of tough decisions, my guess he's back at that number without an extension

Update- most of 2020 became guaranteed 4/1 he's staying

Matt Brieda- restricted free agent expected to be brought back at a reasonable number. Fell down depth chart.

Update- rumored trade candidate

Jeff Wilson- capable backup in case of injuries, got more reps then Brieda in super bowl. In the mix

Jerrick McKinnon- I believe he's owed 8 million in 2020 with 4 million dead money. Story is he wants to come back "no matter what. Renegotiate his deal at 2 years 6 million, 2nd year not guaranteed. That'd save 1 million more then cutting him.

Update- Restructured contact

WIde Reciever (5/6)

Deebo Samuel- he's our number one in 2020. Regardless of any potential draft pick or signing. Some bold predictions of 1000 yds receiving and 500 rushing have been published. Honestly it's quite possible.

Emanuel Sanders- if resigned he starts opposite Deebo and will be the same solid player we saw. The question for me is how much is a 33 year old, 3rd option on a running team? Not 8 figures IMO. 3 year deal 23 million is my limit. 12 guaranteed.

Update- signed 2/19 mil Saints

Jalen Hurd- the rookie that I was hyped about last preseason. Showed flashes. I'd bet how they feel about him is reflected in Sanders free agency, and our draft. Is he healthy? Could be our number 2. Could miss another season. I don't know

Kendrick Bourne- man has this guy just jumped up the pecking order each year. I'd be fine with him as our number 3 again. But I'd love if he was our #5 or 6 also.

Richie James- had his moments, decent special teams, made some plays on offense. He's been healthy. Sometimes availability is your best ability. Bottom of depth chart if all healthy.

Trent Taylor- solid when healthy. Healthy is issue. Hoping he's back and makes roster. Jimmy and him have chemistry.

Goodwin- cut, go for gold, cap savings

Dante Pettis- grade candidate, time to admit what I knew when we traded up and over drafted. 3rd or 4th round guy who we traded up in 2nd for. Pick we traded was Alvin Kamara. I'm still pissed

Draft/Free Agency- if we resign Sanders we could possible still draft a late rounder, if we don't WR is a possibility at 31 or even we trade down.

Tight End (3)

George Kittle- I think he gets 5 years 75 million. I also think he's worth every penny. 1st team all pro. Our best offensive player, maybe best player overall.

Ross Dwelley- man did we get some solid contributions from everywhere this year. Covered for juice and George admirably. Solid backup.

Levine Tollolo- great blocker, he's cheap, he'll be back

Update- signed elsewhere

Offensive Line- (8/9)

Tackles

Staley and McGlinchey our bookends will be back, Staley year by year, near the end. Is McGlinchey our future LT? Some potential at 31 to draft Staley replacement now. Lots of other possibilities

Backups

Skule and Brunskill filled in admirably and are both back cheap. Brunskill also a possibility at guard. Perhaps even starting in 2020. Solid finds. Shon Coleman probably leaves.

Center

Weston Richburg- renegotiated his deal for cap relief, will be back starting. Word is he'll be healthy by camp.

Ben Garland- finished the season starting, can play guard also. Could be back, could be upgraded.

Guard

Laken Tomlinson- our best guard, will be back starting at LG

Mike Person- will be back but could easily be beat out by Brunskill or a drafted upgrade. If they draft the future center early, he could start at guard year 1. I'd guess Brunskill starts at RG next year.

Update- released

Defensive Line (9/10)

Buckner- We lower his cap figure by agreeing to a longterm deal. Get it done quickly before Chris Jones signs and resets market. Won't be Aaron Donald money but it's gonna be big. My suggestion is give him a 6th year and more guaranteed but less total. 6/105 million 60 guaranteed

Update- traded to colts for 2020 #13 overall

Armstead- Were gonna keep him I think and we probably have to. Our D Line got us to the show. He played a huge part. Would 5 years and 70 get it done? I hope so

Update- resigned 5/82 mil

DJ Jones- Ascending player. Don't dismiss his loss down the stretch. Another great pick late. Longterm NT

Nick Bosa- I could watch him play all day long. So glad he stayed healthy. Might be my favorite player on defense in a long time

Dee Ford- We probably overpaid and we'll probably have to restructure in the future but for this offseason get him healthy and hope our line can repeat 2019 with better health across the board

Solomon Thomas- Well we don't always pick the best player do we? How would Christian McCaffery look in this offense. He went 7 to Carolina. Time to trade Solomsn to free up space. Good luck to a good dude

Sheldon Day- He has contributed well last couple years. We bring him back at a modest price to continue to provide quality depth

Update- signed colts

Kentavous Street- Health has prevented from us gauging his true ability. Under team control. In the mix as a backup

Damontre Moore- Sad this dude didn't make initial 53. Stoked he got a shot. Albeit a short one before getting hurt. He made plays. Let's bring him back at vet minimum especially if....

Ronald Blair- I could see Blair getting a shot from someone. He's our 3rd best Edge. If he leaves we gotta draft one you'd think.

Update- resigned 1 year

Julian Taylor- see street above

Anthony Zettel- in the mix depth piece

Update- signed elsewhere

Linebacker (5/6)

Fred Warner- this defense is gonna get expensive. Enjoy every cheap year we can get from our young guys. They might not all stay. Pro bowl next year

Kwon Alexander- I puked in my mouth when I saw his contract. What a fun addition. So glad his paychecks never mattered after the season started. Praying for a healthy year. If not next offseason restructure

Dre Greenlaw- Another 5th round gem. We got two 5th this year 🤞🏽. #85 has our 5th round success looking up.

Lee, Nzeocha, Al-Shaair- we are probably pretty set at LB

Cornerback (5/6)

Sherman- ok here I go, PFF liked his season, pro bowl voters agreed, 2nd team all pro I can't agree with. So happy for him he had a solid season. Hope he's better not worse next year 🤞🏽

Emmanuel Mosley- pros the best undrafted corner ever cons the best undrafted corner ever should probably be your 3rd or 4th best corner. He's our 2nd but he hella outplayed...

Ahkello Witherspoon- he could still come around, has played well in stretches including the start of 2019. Hoping he was never 100% after early season injurie because he never looked the same after

K'Waun Williams- kudos to 49ers for pumping up their players. Pro bowl hype was a bit much. Glad to have him back in the slot. Could see us drafting here early or late

Tim Harris- last guy currently on roster worth mentioning. Let's see what he looks like after a year in organization

Safety (4/5)

Tartt- still see pro bowl potential here. Our SS with ability to play FS in a pinch. Under contract another 2 years I believe

Jimmy Ward- Tough decisions ahead. Last year only time he outplayed his draft position and contract. Huge health risk. Huge. Had a GREAT 13 games tho. Can we give him 3 years 21 million and make it incentive based on games played? Probably not but that what his deal should look like. I'm on the fence. Love him but he scares me. Every time he lays on the ground I'm like "f he's hurt again" and I'm not alone

Update- signed 3/29.5 mil

T Moore- The above decision will be a lot about how we feel about Moore. We've got two more cheap seasons. Is he a starter. The 49ers opinion will come in Wards decision and at #31

Marcell Harris- Has contributed well expecially for a 6th rounder. Solid back up with growing experience.

DJ Reed- he remind me a lot of Jimmy Ward. Can play all over, not sure what his home will be. Versatile backup at slot and both safety spots. Under team control.

Offense- I could see an addition at WR or OL. RB, TE, QB we're pretty set.
Defense- we gotta think cornerback, safety if Ward leaves, otherwise we can always take an edge prospect.

Update- priorities starting WR, CB to compete to start and another to develop for future, OL future LT and current RG competition, DL at least a rotational piece at 3T and Edge, TE we have two, need 4+ for camp

I like your views on each player. Only disagreement is, mclinchey is not a lt. We have no one who can Excel there. He doesn't have the fluid movement, or agility and speed to be a lt

Will add possible free agent targets and draft targets. Defense analysis coming.

Nice f**king post I agree with almost everything. I think MM stays at right tackle as well. Pettis should be returning punts dammit! The all time record holder for punt return tds. He broke deshaun Jackson's record.

I don't disagree. After figuring out safety and WR this year, tackle and corner will be HUGE priorities next IMO.

Pettis saves us nothing by cutting him. Perhaps a smaller, defined role would be a better starting point for him. I never bought the #1 2019 offseason talk for a second. I'm admittedly biased about him. Confession. I gave up on AA to soon. Hope I'm wrong on Pettis too.
