NinerLegionnaire Mock 2021

I used the Draft Network Mock Sim for this Mock Draft. Not that these are going to be the picks anyways, but I put each pick on the Final Roster with the thought of the Salary Cap and Future Extensions. I doubt 4 undersized day 3 picks will actually wind up on the 53 but that's how the draft worked and the money the 49ers do have to spend is better off going towards extensions for elite players on the roster rather than mediocre left-overs still on the market.

Pick 12: Mac Jones QB Alabama (6'2, 217 lbs)
Team Leader, High Football IQ, Accurate. Mac Jones possesses the traits required for elite QB production. Mastery of offensive scheme/concepts. High-Level understanding/Awareness of defensive scheme/concepts. Has True Accuracy, (Ball-Placement + Timing).

Pick 43: Wyatt Davis RG Ohio St. (6'4, 310 lbs)
A Mauler with NFL Bloodlines Davis is said to be best suited for the inside zone. Will need to work on securing and sustaining blocks in the outside zone, but his tape and physical traits make him scheme diverse and a potential plug and play at guard.

Pick 102: Trey Sermon RB Ohio St. (6'0, 213 lbs)
Just watch the Clemson game and imagine him hitting the running lanes in Kyle's offense. Low-Tread, Physical, good balance, good ball security. I feel he would be a dynamic addition to the backfield with Mostert and Wilson.

Pick 117: Israel Mukuamu CB South Carolina (6'3, 205 lbs)
Played all over the Secondary, good athleticism, range, and physicality. In Zone coverage, plays with good leverage, has good ball skills, and is aggressive driving forward. Had 2 really good years then suffered an injury and didnt play well in 2020 which may cause him to slip a bit.

Pick 155: Caden Sterns S Texas (6'0, 210 lbs)
Started 28 games out of 29 played. Comfortable in Man and Zone coverage. Smart and Instinctive with a great feel for passing concepts and the ability to read the Qbs eyes. Has the Range to play Deep-Center and the Hips to turn and run in Man. Aggressive playing the ball and a controlled tackler. Lacks bulk to create pop when tackling although he is willing and needs to adjust his angles of pursuit when defending the run and "coming down the alley". Not a good Blitzer in either technique or physicality.

Pick 172: Shaka Toney Edge Penn State (6'2, 238 lbs)
Excellent release off the snap, High Effort, Energy, and Motor. Fluid movement and continuous hand fighting, excellent balance and body control. Undersized, inconsistent and a run liability at the next level.

Pick 180: Jaelon Darden WR North Texas (5'9, 170 lbs)
Undersized burner with the punt return ability. Fast and smooth, can be used to attack on gadget plays and quick passes with the speed to threaten downfield. Lacks size and physicality to be a true deep threat. Not good in traffic or contested catches. Thankfully Deebo and Aiyuk can handle that and Darden can focus on Special Teams and a Gadget/Slot role.

Pick 194: Shi Smith WR South Carolina (5'10, 186 lbs)
Similar to Darden. While Darden is more of an offensive weapon/playmaker, Smith is the better WR, and has a better shot to produce from the slot. Very good hands and an ability to go up and get the ball, consistent separation and good awareness.

Pick 230: Chris Rumph II Edge/LB Duke (6'3 235 lbs)
Instinctive rusher with traits to when outside and inside. Lacks frame and strength to be a true end or 3-4 edge. Has the talent but may lack athleticism to pay full time in an off-ball LB role. Projects as a situational pass rusher with the potential to develop as an 4-3 OLB.

*I have 1 spot open on the 53 here's a few players that may earn it in no particular order.
Obi Melifonwu DB
Jauan Jennings WR
Adonis Alexander DB
Vet TE like Jordan Reed or Tyler Eifert
Post Draft/Cap Casualty Cut from another team

IMO Prospects 49ers are most realistically hopeful to be available at or around 12.
Mac Jones
Rashawn Slater
Kyle Pitts
Patrick Surtain II

Kinda have a feeling Kyle Pitts is a player Kyle would love to have on the roster.
Overall, I like the roster. Im not high on picking up a RB that high because Shanahan can turn UDFAs into stars. Would maybe like to use that 3rd rounder on another CB because im worried with all the short term deals we have in our secondary. Plus if Moseley or Verrett miss time, we are in trouble.

Also, it would be hard to pass on Slater. IMO, best lineman in the draft. I think he would be perfect at RG and then slide over to RT when McGlinchey leaves because Trent William's deal almost guarantees we will let him walk

I agree on both points you make honestly. Slater wasn't available in the draft, got picked earlier, Devonta Smith was though. If it was Slater or Mac I would have had a terrible time trying to pick. I started last year hoping for Surtain, then as the year progressed Slater became my draft crush.

I may be saying the wrong prospect but Trey Hill CB was available in the 3rd, and I had gone with him in another mock, but Sermon has so much Home-Run potential in this offense imo. Mostert and Wilson have both dealt with injuries as well and Sermon has that physical side to him that could be very beneficial in the NFC West and for this scheme.

I did double dip on similar WR prospects in the later rounds, which i kind of regret, maybe should have gone with a CB or another OL prospect at one of those spots.

Appreciate the feedback

Jones at 12 is such a reach. I'd be upset with this.

Wyatt Davis hurt his knee twice last year. Is Wyatt Davis still hurt?? If he is I think I would pass they do not need another hurt player.
Qb or cb round 1 please

I'd be upset with Jimmy going down...or sucking...and having repeat of last year.

I'll happily take Jones. While I want Wilson, Jimmy needs competition and Jones is already better than him. If Jimmy goes down we have a guy who can come in right away and win. Who else is going to do that outside of the 1st round? Mond/Trask/Mills? Hell no. Minshew? Hell no.

Watson/Wilson/Fields/Lance/and yes Jones.

One of them better be on the mothereffing roster. by Week 1.

QB in round 1..... A++

Plus you protected Jones (and Jimmy) with a top G which is necessary for him to thrive.

RB in 3rd is not as necessary but with your first two picks I'm good with it. CB would be great in 3rd and 4th round. But if Sermon is BPA no issues with it.
