Mock Off-Season - DoseOfBosa

2/11/2022

Extend:

DE Nick Bosa
WB Deebo Samuel

Release:

DE Dee Ford (post 6/1)
(+$7m in cap)

Re-sign:

DE Arden Key
NT DJ Jones
SS Jaquiski Tartt
RB Raheem Mostert
CB Jason Verrett
RT Tom Compton
DE Jordan Willis
WR Trent Sherfield
LB Marcell Harris

** I think Key and Jones will be the highest paid on this list, and could be out of range, but both might be looked at as products of the DL. For what it's worth: PFF has Jones as the 77th best FA, and Key outside the top 125. I would sign them before FA, and let the rest of the players test, before ultimately bringing them back. Tartt played on a $1m contract last year, and was only at $6.5/yr the two years before that, so I can't see him getting more than $7/yr. Mostert has only played 9 games the last two seasons, so he should be affordable, however MIA could be interested with MM there now. The rest should come back for close to vet min. Verrett can obviously start if he's healthy. Compton proved he can start in a pinch, but isn't a long-term option. Sherfield comes back for his STs play, but also remember that he was a favorite of Lance's last TC. Willis, along with Key, could still get better. And Marcell Harris showed flashes at LB last August, and is a core ST'er - a solid #5 LB with upside.

Trades:

PIT: QB Jimmy Garoppolo
SF: Rd2Pk52
(+$16.5m in cap)

MIA: RT Mike McGlinchey + Rd5Pk171
SF: Rd2Pk50
(+$11m in cap)

CLV: K Robbie Gould
SF: 2023 Rd5Pk
(+$4m in cap)

DNV: DE Samson Ebukam
SF: 2023 Rd6Pk
(+$6m in cap)

** Some might think the returns for JG and MM are generous, but QBs and OTs are at a premium. I like McGlinchey, but I don't see him getting an extension after Bosa and Deebo get paid, and by trading him now we save $11m this year and get a nice pick in return, and Compton played just as well down the stretch. Gould is one of the best in the league, but he's 40, this trade could happen after we secure a replacement in the draft. Ebukam gets moved because Key is more valuable and we save $6m.

Free Agents:

LG James Daniels
DB DJ Reed Jr.
QB Tyrod Taylor
TE Evan Engram
DE Dante Fowler Jr.

** DJ Reed Jr. comes home, he might be a little too pricey, but PFF has 9 FA CBs ahead of him on their FA rankings and it's a strong CB class. Reed Jr. could play multiple spots in the secondary, I have him penciled in at NB as K'Waun's replacement. Reed can also return punts and kicks. James Daniels, is only 24, he's extremely athletic and would fit in perfectly with the OL, and he has experience at C. I expect Daniels will get less $ than Tomlinson, however Chicago might push to re-sign him since their OL is awful. 49ers was rumored to be interested in trading for Evan Engram a few seasons ago, since then Engram has had some down years but that's mostly because of how inept the Giants offense has been, he would be a weapon that we didn't have last season, a younger version of Jordan Reed from two years ago. Dante Fowler Jr. is a former bust, but still a talented speed rusher, he had a 11.5 sack season 3 years ago with the Rams - would be in the rotation, essentially replacing Ebukam. And Tyrod Taylor doesn't need much explanation, he seems to be a no-brainer signing after we hired Lynn.

Draft:

Rd2Pk50 -- Abraham Lucas RT Washington St.
Rd2Pk52 -- Verone McKinley III FS Oregon
Rd2Pk61 -- Christian Watson WR North Dakota St.
Rd3Pk93 -- Marcus Jones CB Houston
Rd3Pk104 -- Cade York K LSU
Rd4Pk132 -- Calvin Austin III WR Memphis
Rd6Pk185 -- Jean Delance OT Florida
Rd7Pk252 -- Britain Covey WR Utah
Rd7Pk255 -- Noah Gindorff TE North Dakota St.
Rd7Pk262 -- D'Eriq King QB Miami

**Lucas is 6-6, 320 lbs, long arms, athletic and quick, 4 year starter. There are OTs in the draft with higher upside, but Lucas is a safe pick and a great fit for the OL. Would compete with Compton, Moore, McKivitz and maybe even Brunskill for the RT spot. McKinley III is a ballhawk, he tied the nations with INTs last year (6). Jimmie Ward is a FA after '22, and Tavarius Moore hasn't played in a few years and is also a FA after '22. Christian Watson has size, speed and familiarity with Lance. Marcus Jones is a feisty, yet undersized corner, could play NB. Calvin Austin III is one of the fastest players in the draft, would bring speed that we haven't had at WR since Goodwin. Britain Covey would probably start out on the practice squad but was one of the best, if not the best, punt returners in college football last year - I'm also curious if he could play slot in the NFL, similar to a Trent Taylor type. Watson, Jones, Austin and Covey all have return abilities. Cade York is accurate, can hit from 60 yards, and is clutch... hopefully this year's McPherson. Jean Delance is another athletic RT who can compete, or maybe kick inside to G, could probably stash on the PS if he doesn't win one of the 9 OL spots. Gindorff is another former favorite target of Lance's, nice size and can also run block. And then D'Eriq King is probably too small, but is a leader and a gamer and we need another QB, another practice squad stash.

I like the selections. Austin will be gone by the second round, imo. Why D'Eriq King?
Like how you are thinking when it comes to free agency and trades, but your draft is all over the map. Lucas at his best is ranked as 3rd round pick and a 5th rounder at the worst in the few big boards I've seen. You draft 4 KR's (Watson, Jones, Austin and Covey), a kicker in the 3rd round (?????), 2 OT's and a QB who may move to WR. Niners could use insurance for Mack more than another OT, a bigger boundary CB, and 3rd down back more than some of the guys you picked here IMO.
doubtful on getting a 2nd for MM, my guy.
