Thought Exercise: Trading Aiyuk. With Full 1st Round

With the increase to the cap, we shouldn't need to trade Aiyuk, and good thing because it`d be next to impossible to put up a functional passing offense without him. If it does happen, here's what I'd wish for.

P-FA: Jonathan Greenard
TRADE: Danny Grey for a 7

1 CHI - Caleb Williams, QB
2 WAS - Drake Maye, QB
3 NE - Marvin Harrison Jr, WR
4 ATL (from ARI) - Jayden Daniels, QB
5 MIN (from LAC) - JJ McCarthy, QB
6 NYG - Rome Odunze, WR
7 TEN - Joe Alt, OT
8 ARI (ori ATL) - Malik Nabers, WR
9 NO (from CHI) - Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT
10 NYJ - Taliese Fuaga, OT
11 LAC (ori MIN) - Brock Bowers, TE
12 DEN - Terrion Arnold, CB
13 LV - Dallas Turner, EDGE
14 SF (from CHI, Aiyuk) Jackson Powers-Johnson, IOL
15 IND - Quinyon Mitchell, CB
16 SEA - Troy Fautanu, OL
17 JAC - Jared Verse, EDGE
18 CIN - JC Latham, OL
19 LAR - Liatu Latu, EDGE
20 PIT - Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB
21 MIA - Graham Barton, OL
22 PHI - Nate Wiggins, CB
23 HOU - Byron Murphy II, DT
24 DAL - Tyler Guyton, OT
25 GB - Cooper DeJean, DB
26 TB - Troy Franklin, WR
27 ARI - Johnny Newton, DT
28 BUF - Brian Thomas Jr, WR
29 DET - Ennis Rakestraw Jr, CB
30 BAL - Bralen Trice, DE
31 SF - Amarius Mims, OT
32 KC - Keon Coleman, WR

At the end of the first round, at least our OL is (hopefully) shored up. Both players are relatively new to their positions, but also have the natural tools to quickly settle in. It won't take much to at least be net even with what we trotted out last year, and should quickly become an upgrade as the season progresses. With the Bears at 9 they are out of range for one of the top 3 WR in the class. NO moves up to have their choice of OT ahead of the Jets, and pick 14 becomes more appropriate value for Aiyuk. They get a better WR than they could have drafted at 9, plus extra compensation for the move down.

R2: Edgerrin Cooper, LB
I'd much prefer NOT to use a high draft pick on LB, but this likely a case of BPA. I'm not worried about Dre Greenlaw coming back this year like some are - I'm confident he's back by week 4 at the latest. What I am worried about is his ability to return 100% to form. Greenlaw may look more like a #3 LB when he gets back, and Edgerrin Cooper flies around and hits what moves, just like Greenlaw did.

R3: Roman Wilson, WR
Lack of size means Wilson isn't a traditional #1. However, his speed and separation ability at least leaves room for hope that he can produce like one in our scheme.

R3: Renardo Green, CB
I'm not sure that he qualifies as Charvarius Ward's future replacement, but I do know that I feel very good about a Ward, Lenoir, Green trio. Green was tested by the best WRs in CFB, and he passed.

R4: Mekhi Wingo / Maason Smith, DT
We badly need depth at 3T. This is a copout, but I cant decide, so its pick your poison. Mekhi Wingo is a penetrating type, but undersized. Do his tools translate to the NFL, or will he get swallowed up by bigger, stronger OL. Maason Smith looked like the next coming of Chris Jones before tearing his ACL. He hasnt looked close to the same since. Will he return to form another year removed from the injury, or is this his new baseline of athleticism? Was he misused playing over center do frequent? Personally, I lean Wingo. His highs pop off the screen.

R4: Javon Solomon, EDGE
Not really our type, but maybe that's a good thing. We've struggled to find a long term answer at edge rusher outside of Bosa which was the no brainer pick at #2 OA. Solomon is a long-armed explosive, flexible, high motor pass rush specialist.

R5: Christian Jones, OL
Let him compete at RG year one, and see if he can potentially go back to RT if Mims goes to the left side to replace Trent in a few years. Not exactly sure why, but he reminds me of Alaric Jackson who I liked a lot as a later round player coming out of his draft class, and who has been starting for the Rams.

R6: Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, S
We are probably locked into Hufanga and Brown as the starters next year, but we have nothing behind them. Undersized but instinctual.

R6: Dylan Laube, RS
I'm not super excited about him as a RB, and I think he's serviceable running routes, but I mostly want him as a return specialist since I'm not looking to pay RayRay.

R6: Jalen Coker, WR
Tough, reliable possession receiver.

R7: Ryan Flournoy, WR
If Deebo is out #1 WR, we're going to need some receivers who can open things up for him. Flournoy is reported to be an athletic freak, and defenders absolutely must honor the threat of him as a deep ball receiver. It helps that he works over the middle and is a tough and willing blocker so that he can see the field early.

R7: Zach Heins, TE
I'm going to continue taking fliers on big, athletic, well-rounded blocker+catcher tightens until we finally find our TE2 opposite Kittle with a chance to be a serviceable replacement whenever that time comes

UDFA: Evan Anderson
Our run defense sucks. Please get me someone with size who can anchor down vs double teams and shed single blocks. Thanks.

Primary roster:
QB: Brock Purdy
RB: CMC, Moore, Mason, Laube, Juszczyk
OL: Williams, Banks, Powers-Johnson, Feliciano, Mims, Jones
WR: Deebo, Wilson, Jennings, Bell, Coker, Flournoy
TE: Kittle, Willis, Heins

DL: Bosa, AA, Hargrave, Greenard(or chase), Jackson, Wingo/Smith, Solomon, Anderson
LB: Warner, Cooper, Greenlaw
CB: Ward, Lenoir, Green, Luter, Womack
S: Hufanga, Brown, Demerson

Agree with Kriz. Need a bigger bodied WR and Rice fits the bill. We still have Ronnie Bell if he survives the offseason and makes the roster again.

Im not mad at the preference for Rice - I can understand the desire for a bigger, more prototypical #1 X WR archetype. I just don't think Rice has any traits, besides size and physicality, to hang his hat on to produce like a #1. Roman Wilson, to me, is just a better player, and our scheme combined with his speed and separation ability can create more opportunities for production.

Rice is a deep threat, but doesn't have truly elite speed. His footwork is too clunky to separate consistently on comebacks, which doesn't pair well with an inability to truly threaten a defense deep. Give me someone who can separate, reliably, on all route concepts, and with the speed to open up things underneath for Deebo who is going to be thrust back into the #1 role as far as targets are concerned

Point taken. Rice does needs some development and it showed at the Senior Bowl. Just don't know if Wilson is the right fit either. There will be a lot of WR's to choose from on day 2 of the draft. Guys like Xavier Legette, Malachi Corley, Ricky Pearsal, Jermaine Burton, Jalen McMillan, etc. may all be there. Definitely something to monitor closely once they decide what they are going to do with Aiyuk.
