I remember while waiting for the 49ers pick @ #10, I said to Miles, "I hope McCloughan doesn't f*** this up!" I was so nervous!

But it was a no brainer not to pick him.
The only WR in NCAA history to win the Fred Biletnikoff twice , I believe ?
One other player. I think Clavin Johnson
good company

I was afraid the Niners wouldn't take him but it had nothing to do with McG.
It has happened to me before.
SEVERAL year ago, the Niners were in desperate need of a RB and there was a RB I REALLY liked out of Indiana. All of the scouts said there was NO WAY he could possibly make it out of the top 10.
The Niners had the 18th pick.
Well...that RB DID fall all the way to the Niners pick. I was doing backflips because I thougth the Niners would FINALLY get that RB....and they didn't freakin' take him. I was crushed.
I STILL haven't recovered. I NEVER think the Niners will take the guy I want...lol.
BTW, the guy the Niners DID take that year was S Dana Hall (TOTAL bust) and the RB I really wanted (Vaughn Dunbar - busted as well, but I still think he could have been decent as a Niner) went to the Saints at 21.
Also...the Niners took Ricky Watters the year before who promptly broke his foot, but became the starter over second round pick Amp Lee in the Preseason...and Ricky turned out OK. ;-)

Why should the 49ers care what the fans think? We don't know anything. That's why we are fans and not scouts. The last thing the 49ers should be doing is listening to the fans. ill tell you one thing..I'm positive bill walsh never cared who the fans wanted.

i remember that year....i really wanted niners to take touchdown tommy vardell from stanford, but i think the browns traded up to get him....tommy later came to sign with niners towards end of his career.....with vardell gone, i really wanted niners to take dale carter from tennessee...i always thought that carter, who was much faster and quicker than hall, would have stopped alvin harper in tha cowboys playoff game when he ran a slant for about 70 yards, past hall, as niners were getting momentum for great comeback
i also wanted niners to take brett farve many years ago, even though they had montana, young and bono, as i thought he would be a great qb after reading the draft mags (i remember he beat alabama his sr season)..instead they took fat ted washington...i also had same feeling i had for farve when niners took giovanni carmazzi, so one can never tell

Crabs is the only player to win it twice.

Yeah I would have been upset. Orakopo was in the mix for me too.
That said, given that neither I nor anybody else has any idea which of these three players will have the best career (or will even end up being mediocre), I wouldn't have been too upset about it (I've gotten over my absolutism about draft choices at this point).

I was in position to accept our immediate needs of an OL or DE. In fact, this is what i told my buddies (in case we passed up on someone of this caliber).
But once MC was on the phone, I jumped up and said "We're going to get Crabs!?"

I stated when the draft started that the 3 players I wanted if they were still on the board were in this order:
1)Micheal Crabtree
2)B.J Raji
3)Brian Orakpo
When Oakland took DHB I knew that Crabtree was gonna drop to ten,I just wasn't sure if they were still going to take him. After Raji went to Green Bay it came down to Crabtree and Orakpo, but I had a feeling we weren't going to pass on Crabtree, and I was extremely happy to hear Goodell call his name out.

There would not have been a huge backlash because they would have been seen as taking Oher around the spot that he was expected to go from the various mock drafts and it would have filled a need as well and been seen as part of the "we're going to be a smashmouth running football team" philosophy (that has been overblown IMHO). As it was, there was some backlash from the media that they didn't fill their need for another OT because they picked Crabtree instead of Oher.
Yes, there probably would have been a small backlash but nothing significant...at least until Crabtree scored his first TD in week 1.

Wow...ya, I remember Touchdown Tommy and Dale Carter.
I can't remember his name, but the Falcons took a RB over Dunbar that year too that I liked...and he never became anything either. He was a tall, lanky guy...kinda looked like Eric Dickerson when he ran....I wish I could remeber his name. I liked him as well and the papers predicted he would be the Niners pick.
